Adults who are not current on them COVID-19 vaccine booster dose There may be “relatively little residual protection” against hospitalizations compared to those not vaccinated at all, suggests a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The study spanned multiple states and examined more than 85,000 people hospitalized with “COVID-like illnesses.”
Dr. Shana Johnson, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician in Scottsdale, ArizonaThe CDC was not involved in the study but reviewed its findings.
Previous Covid infections offer the same protection as the vaccine, new research shows
The good news, Johnson said, is that bivalent mRNA vaccines are the most protective Severe COVID-19 resultsIncluding hospitalizations and serious illnesses (ICU admissions and deaths), Johnson said.
The not-so-good news: The durability or duration of protection wasn’t great, he noted.
“For adults, the vaccine’s effectiveness in protecting against Covid-19 hospitalizations dropped from 62% at two months after vaccination to 24% at 4 to 6 months,” Johnson said.
“Stability was good for resistance Severe COVID-19 disease50% between four and six months after vaccination.”
The vaccine has been shown to be effective for a long time in people without immunocompromising conditions (weak immune systems).
“Vaccine effects in reducing severity or prolonging COVID prevention are not permanent.”
“These data support updated recommendations that authorize additional optional bivalent COVID-19 vaccine doses for certain high-risk populations,” the CDC said in a discussion of the study’s findings on its website.
“All eligible individuals should be up to date with recommended COVID-19 vaccines.”
Only 20% of US adults receive booster doses
Despite the CDC’s September 2022 recommendation that all vaccinated individuals age 12 and older receive a booster dose, most Americans have not received it.
Women are more likely to get ‘prolonged Covid’, but healthy habits can reduce the risk
As of May 10, 2023, only 1 in 5 (20.5%) US adults received a bivalent booster dose.
And most of that group received their last vaccine dose more than a year ago, the CDC reported in the study findings.
“The uptake has been quite low,” said Dr. Mark Siegel, professor of medicine NYU Langone Medical CenterFox News Digital said.
“It makes total sense for adults — especially those in high-risk groups, including the elderly and those with chronic diseases — to get a bivalent shot if they don’t already have one.”
Dr. Siegel was not involved in the CDC study.
‘Covid is still with us’
While cases and deaths continue to decline in the U.S., Siegel warned that “Covid is still with us,” citing the “huge” outbreak currently occurring in China.
“Here in the U.S., XBB subvariants still predominate, our population is much more immune than in China,” he noted.

“This immunity is due to both prior infection as well as vaccination,” he said.
“But the vaccine’s effect on reducing severity or prolonging COVID prevention is not forever — after a year, that effect must have diminished significantly,” he added.
The vaccine provides ‘broad coverage’
“This study looked at how long the bivalent mRNA vaccine protects people from hospitalization and serious illness from COVID-19,” Johnson told Fox News Digital.
What the study did not assess was previous COVID-19 infection or natural immunity, he explained.
“The authors note that since a large portion of the population has experienced Covid, they have some protection from natural immunity, but the vaccine provides additional benefits,” he said.

“Natural immunity provides an advantage, but the vaccine provides broader coverage, which protects against more variation.”
