KARACHI: Officials and health experts have expressed a significant need for hundreds of skilled gastroenterologists in tertiary-care health facilities across the country, as about 60-70% of patients seeking emergency treatment at hospitals come with complaints related to gastrointestinal tract and liver diseases.
Addressing the inaugural session of the fifth annual conference of the Pak GI and Liver Disease Society (PGLDS) on Saturday, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) Executive Director Prof Dr Shaheed Rasool identified the need to bridge this gap.
“Approximately 60-70% of the emergency burden in healthcare facilities consists of patients requiring treatment for diarrhoea, vomiting, other gastrointestinal health problems and liver problems. In this scenario, we need more trained and qualified gastroenterologists to deal with the growing burden of patients with GI health problems,” he said.
Eminent medical experts and gastroenterologists from Pakistan, along with medical students and trainees, participated in the three-day scientific conference, where various topics including waterborne diseases, viral and bacterial infections such as hepatitis B and C, irritable bowel syndrome were discussed. irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and the use of artificial intelligence in diagnosis and treatment.
Additionally, practical training sessions on advanced endoscopy and other procedures are also organized as part of the conference.
For the first time in Pakistan’s history, Helicobacter pylori treatment guidelines were launched by PGLDS in collaboration with Infectious Disease Society of Pakistan, organizers said, as more than 70% of Pakistan’s population suffers from Helicobacter pylori infection.
Dr. Rasool, who was the chief guest of the conference, revealed that in a few weeks they are going to start one of the most advanced procedures in gastroenterology in the hospital, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), for which they are going to hire. Dr. Lubna Kamani, president of PGLDS and professor of gastroenterology at Liaquat National Hospital, said, besides training young doctors, their society is focusing on research in the field of gastroenterology as well as encouraging more women in the field of gastroenterology, as female patients feel comfortable. “In this regard, we launched WILMED, the Women in Leadership League of Medicine to encourage female doctors to come forward and train themselves in the field of medicine and gastroenterology”.
He said that for the first time, they used simulators to train young gastroenterologists on endoscopy and other procedures of the gastrointestinal tract while coming up with treatment guidelines for managing Helicobacter pylori infection in a large population of Pakistan.
Renowned Gastroenterologist Dr. Wasim Jafri said, despite the difficult political and economic conditions, talented Pakistani experts and youth have the power to bring the country out of any crisis and urged the young graduates to stay in the country, equip themselves with the latest techniques and knowledge. In his keynote address, eminent gastroenterologist Dr. Amir Gafoor decried the declining standards of medical education in the country, particularly the Fellows of College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS). He urged the young graduates to focus on learning, acquiring knowledge and modern techniques to compete with medical experts around the world.
“There is no shortcut to success. Our youth are more focused on earning money instead of acquiring knowledge and skills. You cannot become a good doctor and a respected health professional if you do not have knowledge and skills,” he advises.
Dr. Shahid Ahmed, patron of PGLDS, said that a large section of the population of Pakistan was suffering from various diseases of the gastrointestinal tract but unfortunately, even in the outskirts of the city, small towns and rural areas, trained and qualified counselors were not available to them. the country
“In this scenario, PGLDS is trying to train young doctors so that the facilities of endoscopy, ERCP and other advanced procedures can be available to a large majority of the population,” he added.
Other senior medical professionals including Dr. Nazish Butt, Dr. Sajjad Jamil, social media celebrity Dr. Affan Qaiser, Dr. Bakhat Buland, Dr. Hussain Baloch and several other experts also addressed the conference.
