The 28-year-old PhD student in criminal justice was extradited from his home state of Pennsylvania to Idaho on Wednesday. Facing four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary, Kohberger did not enter a plea during his initial court appearance Thursday.
The suspect was arrested in Pennsylvania on December 30, nearly seven weeks later Kylie Goncalves, 21; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Ethan Chapin, 20, Found fatally stabbed in an off-campus home.
Here are the key takeaways from the court documents — including the probable cause affidavit used to obtain Kohberger’s arrest and warrant — and some questions that remain.
Trash recovered from Kohberger’s family’s Pennsylvania home late last month and sent to an Idaho state lab for DNA testing revealed that a “DNA profile from the trash” matched a tan leather knife sheath that was found “lying on the bed.” The victim, according to the probable cause affidavit.
DNA in the trash identified “a male not excluded as the biological father” of the suspect whose DNA was found on the sheath.
“At least 99.9998% of males are expected to be excluded from the possibility of being the suspect’s biological father,” the affidavit states.
One of the two unharmed roommates told investigators he saw a masked man dressed in black at the home the morning of the attack, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Identified in the document as DM, the roommate said she “heard crying” in the house that morning and a male voice saying, ‘Okay, I’m going to help you.’
DM told investigators he saw “a figure dressed in black and a mask covering the man’s face and nose walking toward him,” according to the affidavit.
“DM described the figure as 5′ 10″ or taller, male, not very muscular, but athletically built with bushy eyebrows,” the affidavit said. “The man walked past DM as he stood in ‘frozen shock.’ was.”
“The man walked towards the rear sliding glass door. DM locked himself in his room after seeing the man,” according to the document, which said the roommate did not recognize the man.
Authorities reviewed local surveillance footage and found a white sedan, later identified as a Hyundai Elantra, according to the affidavit.
The car was spotted in the area around the house where the murder took place.
By Nov. 25, local law enforcement was notified to be on the lookout for the vehicle, the affidavit states.
Days later, officers at nearby Washington State University, where the suspect was a PhD student in criminal justice, spotted a white Elantra and found it was registered to Kohberger.
According to the affidavit, Kohberger’s driver’s license information was consistent with the description given to investigators by the intact roommate.
The documents specifically mention Kohberger’s height and weight — 6 feet and 185 pounds — and that he has bushy eyebrows.
Five days after the murder, Kohberger received a new license plate for his Elantra, the affidavit said, citing records from the Washington State Department of Licensing.
At the time of Kohberger’s arrest last week, a white Elantra was found at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania, according to Monroe County Chief Public Defender Jason Labar, who said Kohberger had gone home for the holidays.
Phone records show Kohberger’s phone was near the victim’s residence at least 12 times since June, according to court documents.
“All but one of these events took place in the late evening and early morning of their respective days.”
Additionally, records show Kohberger’s phone was near the scene of the slaying — 1122 King Road — between 9:12 a.m. and 9:21 a.m. — hours after the slaying, according to court documents.
A review of phone records showed that Kohberger’s phone left his home for Moscow at approximately 9 a.m., the affidavit said, and that same phone “returned to the area of the Kohberger residence … arriving in the area at approximately 9:32 a.m.”
Kohberger applied for an internship with the Pullman Police Department in Washington in the fall of 2022, court documents show.
“According to records provided by a member of the Pullman Police Department’s interview panel, we learned that Kohberger’s past education included graduate degrees in psychology and cloud-based forensics,” according to an affidavit.
“These records also show that Kohberger wrote an essay when he applied for an internship with the Pullman Police Department in the fall of 2022. Kohberger wrote in his essay that he was interested in helping rural law enforcement agencies learn how to better collect and analyze technical data. Public Safety Activities.”
Almost two months after the murder, many questions remain.
It’s unclear why the unharmed roommate didn’t immediately call 911 or why the roommates were saved.
The motive for the crime also remains a mystery, and police say they are still looking for the murder weapon.
The documents released Thursday did not shed light on whether Kohberger had any other reason to be in the area at the time of the killing.
Why wasn’t Kohberger arrested until more than six weeks after the victims were found dead?
And authorities have not publicly said whether Kohberger knew any of the victims.
