The Ministry of Railways has set up an Emergency Control Cell in Chennai and a War Room at the Railway Building in New Delhi to deal with the challenges posed by Cyclone ‘Michang’. “Indian Railways has extensively prepared its entire machinery to ensure and conduct smooth and safe rail operations in areas likely to be affected by cyclone ‘Michang’,” a statement issued by the railway ministry on Monday said.
“Indian Railways has set up an Emergency Control Cell with officers from Operating, Commercial, Engineering, Electrical, Signal/Telecommunications, Security, etc. at the Divisional/Headquarters level as part of its preparedness for cyclone-related disaster management. The ministry has also activated a war room at the board level to help in emergency management so that all locations are monitored round-the-clock and safety consultants are designated on each shift.
Also, it has directed all field officers and supervisors to assist emergency control officers for smooth train operation and keep a close watch on cyclone movement and IMD forecast so that train operations can be worked accordingly.
“The Health Unit, Chennai Division has also prepared its disaster management action plan and formed two teams. Team A along with doctors and other on-duty staff will board the SPART (Self Propelled Accident Relief Train) at Platform No. 11 as soon as the message arrives and the disaster / will report to the officer-in-charge at the scene of the accident and start relief work,” the ministry said.
It added, “Team B will report the casualties and a part of Team B will proceed by road. The rest will inform all concerned, maintain contact with Medical Team A, CMS Office, Local Railway Hospital, Railway Hospital, Perambur and Local Railways.” Continue to inform hospitals. Southern Railway also said it is keeping a close eye on the locations that suffered the most damage during the previous cyclone.
It has issued instructions to keep sufficient number of diesel locomotives fully fueled, ready to facilitate train movement to respond to emergencies.
