the theater December 15, ‘Wonka‘ The last appearance of a character at a young age, intended to explain how Willy Wonka managed to run his wondrous candy factory, as seen in 1971’Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory‘ and 2005’Charlie and the Chocolate Factory‘, both adapted from works by British author Roald Dahl.
under director Paul KingIt’s a musical origin story, featuring one of the hottest young actors and a cast brimming with comedic and dramatic talent.
‘Onka’ is a sweet treat?
Prequels can be an interesting proposition at the best of times. You’re often filling in details that characters’ backstories deserve to remain mysterious—looking at you,’Solo: A Star Wars Story‘
But in the hands of someone like Paul King, there is solace in the fact that the movie justifies its existence through sheer exuberance and joy. Even if you’re still not sure you need to know how Willy became Wonka, you’ll at least have fun with him on his journey.
To be precise, he was at the end of a journey when we first meet him here, a year-long journey gathering ingredients and perfecting skills to achieve his dream of becoming a master chocolatier.
You know it works for him, but King and his cast make sure you’re still invested in his early days.
‘Onka’: Screenplay and Direction
It’s been something of a banner year for adaptations of Roald Dahl’s work, in between Wes Anderson Short film for Netflix (Before, ‘Matilda‘musical movies) and now this wonderful effort.
King also wrote the screenplay for the new movie Simon Farnaby (who has a small, generally funny role in the film), and makes the most of the imagination and sheer warmth he brings to both ‘Paddington‘The film and its earlier efforts,’The rabbit and the bull‘
It’s a smartly crafted story that, while it obviously touches on themes and ideas we’ve seen tackled before, does so in a way that doesn’t feel tired. Wonka has life lessons to share, a group of friends he recruits to help him, and some scheming business enemies, but they all bear the funny, clever stamp of King and Farnaby. If not every role is as rounded as the title character, many of them have grace notes and quirks that work.
Taken from the page, ‘Onka’ thanks to the attention to detail that King and his team apply to the world of the film. Using a mix of sets and selected locations such as the UK city of Bath and Oxford University to bring Wonka’s vaguely Euro mash-up setting to life, he evokes the feel of 1971’s ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ –– more so than 2005. Tim Burton ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ –– and called again Rube Goldberg A sense of ‘Paddington’ at the level of invention (there is a scene that features a particularly useful invention that echoes the Geographer’s Guild in the world of ‘Paddington’).
‘Onka’ is a great looking –– and sounding –– movie, its musical aspect helps the characters’ stories move forward rather than pausing. If you were wondering what King could do outside of musical numbersPaddington 2‘, then you’re in for a treat, and working with the founder of the Divine Comedy pop group Neil Hannon has led to some interesting tunes.

‘Onka’: acting
Naturally, Timothee Chalamet Here the focus is on the ever-optimistic Wonka, the delightful, sweet life-breather, who nevertheless has her own emotional baggage (which, you won’t be surprised to learn is probably a driving force Disney And harry potter used both). But in the hands of the rising young star, who gets more laughs here than in a handful of recent movies), Willy Wonka is an interesting character to spend time with instead of being cloying.
There is a specific indication Gene WilderIts Wonka here, and not just because of the use of the classic song ‘Pure Imagination’ in both the score and the movie (we won’t spoil exactly how). Chalamet’s character has a similar mix of dark and light, weighted more towards the latter here) and if you dial into his vibe, you’ll have a good time with him.
Raja has assembled a fine ensemble of actors, all of them brilliant and wacky, Calah LaneIts Noodle delivers the former (cut with a healthy side of snark so he’s never too cloying), and a mostly cast of comedy heavyweights brings the latter.
Olivia Coleman A relatively small role as the manipulative boarding house/laundry owner Mrs. Screwbitt makes a lot of sense, with Tom Davis As Mr. Bleacher, he will have a hulking paramour.
On the friendly front, we have choices Jim Carter, Natasha Rothwell, Rich Fulcher And Rakhi Thackeray As the unwitting victims of Mrs. Screwbit’s calculating methods, we turn to the villain Patterson Joseph, Matt Lucas And Matthew Baynton Wonka has a blast making chocolate like a competition.
Keegan-Michael Key Meanwhile a serious sweet tooth generates plenty of laughs as the corrupt local police chief. Finally, there is Hug approvalKnocks the role of a groovy Oompa Loompa out of the park and steals any scene he takes.
‘Onka’: Final Thoughts
Does ‘Onka’ surpass ‘Paddington’ in charm and appeal? No not really. But then, it’s hard to top the level of weapons-grade positivity from Peruvian bears.
Still, Paul King delivers a sweet, fun musical confection here that will delight the family and leave listeners with a fulfillment you’ll rarely find outside of a satisfying candy bar.
‘Wonka’ has 8.5 out of 10 stars.
