Pittsburgh — Steeler quarterback Kenny Pickett He underwent ankle surgery to “accelerate the healing process” of a high sprain in his right ankle, coach Mike Tomlin said Monday.
Do not picket the field at Thursday’s game New England PatriotsAnd while coach Mike Tomlin declined to give a specific timetable for the quarterback’s return, he said the injury is not season-ending.
“They’re always going to come out of the OR with some information on that, but I’m not privy to it sitting here today,” Tomlin said when asked about Pickett’s recovery timeline. “That’s why I framed it the way I did. Rest assured, he won’t be available this week.”
Pickett underwent a “tightrope” procedure, sources told ESPN.
quarterback Mitch Trubisky After losing to Sunday, he took charge of the picket Arizona Cardinals And will start against the Patriots, when Mason Rudolph Will back him up.
“He gets the most work,” Tomlin said, explaining the decision to start Trubisky over Rudolph. “You can’t give three people a job, to be honest with you. Most of Mason Rudolph’s work comes on a scout team offense, and so Mitch is positioned to get the job.”
The Steelers also signed the former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley Monday in the practice squad
Thursday will mark the seventh time in 26 games Trubisky has been affected by Pickett’s injury. Tomlin, however, dismissed the idea that Pickett’s repeated injuries were a concern.
“He was managing that ankle before yesterday,” Tomlin said. “I think it was listed on the injury report every day last week and so it escalated, and we did what we needed to do to address it.
“I don’t know that we see it as anything long-term, especially with something like an ankle injury, and so we’re sitting here right now dealing with it on a case-by-case basis.”
Earlier this season, Pickett left two games early with a bruised knee and a rib injury. After taking over the starting job at the start of the 2022 season, Pickett exited two games early with an injury and missed one start.
The Steelers are 0-3 in games where Trubisky has taken over this season, while they were 2-1 last season when Trubisky either took over or started after Pickett became the full-time starter in Week 5.
This season, Trubisky has completed 29 of 49 attempts for 273 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
“He’s been a franchise quarterback before,” Tomlin said of Trubisky. “He’s comfortable in these shoes. He doesn’t act like a backup like he’s advanced, and I think that’s what makes him interesting.”
Trubisky will face a defense that has held opponents to seven points or less in its past three outings. The Patriots’ passing defense has also improved over its past three games, limiting opposing offenses to an average of 189.3 yards.
But tight ends Pat Freiremuth expressed confidence in Trubisky, downplaying the notion that losing Pickett is hurting the Steelers and their postseason hopes.
“It would be the same crime.” Freiremuth said this on Monday. “Mitch represents in practice, and we have full confidence in Mitch to execute the game plan. We’re just full steam ahead.”
