Days after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) suspended former cricketer Salman Butt within 24 hours of his dismissal, former legendary pacer Wasim Akram advised the board to “stand by” their decision.
Taking to social media platform X, Akram slammed the cricket board for backtracking on Butt’s dismissal and said: “Don’t hold a press conference every three minutes. Stick to your decision.”
“You [PCB] You should be aware of the consequences of your decisions […] think first [you make a decision]. Be brave,” he added.
Former star left-arm pacer Batke – along with Kamran Akmal and Rao Iftikhar Anjum – referred to the board’s decision to appoint him as an “advisory member” to chief selector Wahab Riaz. The decision, however, did not sit well with former cricketers and fans who slammed the board for appointing the controversial figure to the board – leading to his sacking the very next day.
Butt, for his role in the 2010 spot-fixing scandal, was sentenced to 30 months in prison and banned for 10 years for his involvement in a conspiracy to bowl a deliberate no-ball during a 2010 Test match against England at Lord’s.
The decision to sack Butt was announced by chief selector Wahab Riaz who said he had informed the former captain that he could not be part of his team.
However, it was later revealed that the PCB had reversed its earlier decision at the behest of caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakkar, who insisted that the selection committee must remain free from controversy, adding that the Prime Minister had ordered “reputable” and “non- “Controversial” electors should be appointed to the posts.
The Sultan of Swing – while commenting on newly appointed officials – stressed the importance of giving new management enough to prove their mettle.
“Let’s give them a year […] Mohammad]Hafeez came as cricket director and coach, Riaz, Kamran Akmal and co came as chief selectors. Give them some time, it’s their turn.”
Akram also wished the Pakistan cricket team well ahead of their Test series against Australia.
Note that the green shirts – who have not won a match in Australia in nearly three decades – will lock horns with the Aussies in their three-match Test series with the home side.
