ISLAMABAD: The European Union (EU) has conveyed to the government that due to lack of time, it will not be able to send a full election observation mission like the 2018 elections and will also be unable to provide recommendations. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has invited observation missions for next year’s elections. The EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has observed the country’s elections five times.
At the time of the last election in 2018, the EU EOM consisted of a core team of 10 analysts and 60 long-term observers across the country. On election day, it deployed a total of 122 observers.
Later, in October 2018, the mission shared its final report with Pakistani authorities with 30 recommendations to improve future electoral processes. At least 8 of the 30 recommendations were identified as priorities.
“Only a small mission of experts will visit Pakistan during the 2024 elections, when no poll recommendations or political assessments will be presented to the Pakistani government. The EU will not send a full-fledged election observation mission. They need months in advance to plan and budget,” Pakistan said. EU Ambassador Ms Rina Kionka said the news.
The ambassador said they communicated their position to various government officials whom he met recently.
When the Foreign Office spokesperson was asked if the EU mission or ministry had issued any invitations to election observers from individual countries or international organizations, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said: “I do not have that information. So, I have to take it back and maybe respond on another occasion.”
The ECP requested the Ministry of External Affairs to take necessary measures to invite international observers to monitor the transparency of the upcoming general elections and a code of conduct for international observers would also be published.
The ECP said it has conveyed to the Ministry of External Affairs that it believes in an open door policy and welcomes observation missions for the upcoming general elections as soon as necessary.
