As four teams celebrate the chance to play for a national title on the field, undefeated ACC champions State of Florida Outside, coach Mike Norvell said he was “disgusted and angry” the Seminoles became the first undefeated Power 5 conference champion to ever miss the College Football Playoff.
“I am disgusted and outraged by the committee’s decision today to take what was achieved off the field because a small group decided they knew better than the outcome of the game,” Norvell said in a statement. “What’s the point of playing games? Do you tell players it’s okay to quit when someone goes down? Don’t you play a senior on Senior Day for fear of injury? Where’s the motivation to schedule challenging non-conference games?
“Not only are we an undefeated P5 conference champion, but we’ve also played two P5 non-conference games away from home and won both. I don’t understand how we should think that’s an acceptable way to evaluate a team. … What today is. What happened goes against everything that is true and right in college football.”
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips added: “It’s unimaginable.”

“Florida State is a different team than the first 11 weeks,” CFP selection committee chairman Boo Corrigan told ESPN. “As you can see who they are as a team right now, except Jordan TravisOther than the offensive dynamism he brings, they’re a different team and the committee voted Alabama four and Florida State five.”

Devastated. Heartbroken in so much disbelief, I wish I had broken my leg early in the season so you could see this team is about more than a quarterback. I thought results mattered. 13-0 and this list matches any team in the top 4 rankings. I am very sorry. Go to Knowles!

Florida State, as the No. 5 seed, will face the two-time defending national champions Georgia Bulldogs (No. 6) in Capital One Orange Bowl 30 December.
“The consequences of capitulating to the narrative of the moment are devastating, far-reaching and lasting. Not just for the state of Florida, but for all of college football,” FSU athletic director Michael Alford said in a statement. “The argument of whether a team is ‘the most deserving or the best’ is a false equivalency. It renders the season as of yesterday irrelevant and significantly undermines the legitimacy of the College Football Playoff.
“… The committee failed college football today.”
The FSU defense has been great since Travis was injured. In the past two games, the Florida State defense has a combined 13 sacks — and has held its past two opponents to zero or negative yards in the fourth quarter.
“The 2023 Florida State Seminoles are the epitome of a total team,” Alford said in his statement. “To exclude them from the opportunity to compete for a national championship is an unjustifiable injustice that shows complete disregard and disrespect for their performance and achievements. It is inexcusable.
“Confronting our current quarterback situation as this team continues to win in dominant fashion, we should have improved our case for a playoff berth on the field. Instead, the committee decided to elevate themselves and ‘make history’ today. Starting 25 years ago Excluding an undefeated Power 5 conference champion for the first time since the advent of the BCS/CFP era is a departure from what made the game great. This ridiculous decision is a departure from competitive expectations that have stood the test of time in college football.”
Florida State was No. 4 in the previous CFP rankings, and before Sunday’s selection, no team outside the top six of the second-to-last CFP rankings had ever made the jump to the Final Four. Alabama and Texas both accomplished the feat on Sunday.
“[FSU’s] “It calls into question whether the selection process followed the committee’s own guidelines with the significant importance of being an undefeated Power Five conference champion,” Phillips said in his statement. “My heart breaks for the talented FSU student-athletes and coaches and their passionate and loyal fans.
“Florida State deserves better. College football deserves better.”
Alford adamantly denied that the team’s quarterback situation should even matter, as the Seminoles kept winning.
Alford said, “Wins are important. Loses are important. People who compete on the field know that. “People on the committee who competed in sports and should have known that forgot that. Today, they have changed the way they evaluate success in college football from a tangible metric — wins on the field — to a vague, subjective one. Obviously, predicting the future is more important.
“For many of us, the committee’s decision today has forever damaged the credibility of the institution of the College Football Playoff. And most sadly, it was self-inflicted. They chose predictive competitiveness over proven performance; subjectivity over reality. They have become a committee of predictors. They have their Abandoned their responsibility by abandoning the objective — to assess performance on the field.”
Norvell said the Seminoles overcame adversity to keep winning despite the quarterback injury.
“I feel bad for our players who have shown a tremendous amount of resilience and resilience this season,” Norvell said. “… A team that overcame tremendous adversity and found a way to win with whatever it took on the field was cheated today. It’s a sad day for college football.”
On Sunday afternoon the coach watched the selection ceremony with his team, and Norvell’s head sank when he learned the fate of the Seminoles.
“That was one of my toughest moments,” Norvell said. “For what they did, you talk about a team responding to adversity, getting up and going to do whatever it takes to find a way to win a college football game. It’s hard to do.
“Especially when you’ve had some of the adversity we’ve had this year, whether it’s injuries or different things that have come up, that’s all part of it. We always tell our team, your true identity comes out in times of great adversity. And we’ve faced that, and they It put it on display. So there was really that feeling in the moment.”
Florida State’s elimination from the College Football Playoff was felt throughout the game.
Asked if he could contemplate going 13-0 and taking the field, Washington coach Calen DeBoer said simply: “Honestly, no.”
Texas linebacker Joylan Ford Said “Just like us, they put in the same amount of work in the offseason. They fought just as hard throughout the season. They’re still players. They still have a program. It’s a tough situation to be in.”
Georgia’s pursuit of a third straight national championship was derailed by an untimely loss. The Bulldogs (12-1) had won 29 straight games, but Saturday’s loss to Alabama in the SEC title game kept Georgia on the outside looking in. As a result, the Bulldogs finally became the first No. 1 team in the CFP rankings. Lost out of the top four at the championship weekend.
The only others can be completely out of No. 1 at any time Tennessee (one week in 2022) and Mississippi State (three weeks in 2014).
The SEC champion has never been eliminated from the College Football Playoff. Alabama, which came in eighth, kept the streak alive.
The SEC has won the last four national championships (Georgia twice, Alabama and LSU), and six of nine total titles in the CFP era. Twice, two SEC teams have played for the championship: Alabama beat Georgia for the 2017 title, and Georgia topped Alabama for the 2021 title.
