Michigan, Washington, Texas And Alabama Selected by the College Football Playoff Committee to compete for the National Championship State of Florida — First time in CFP history an undefeated Power 5 champion failed to finish in the top four.
The Seminoles entered Saturday night in fifth place despite going 13-0 and winning an ACC championship, down to a third-string quarterback after an injury to a starter. Jordan Travis (leg) and backup Tate Roadmaker (Injury) is the defending national champion Georgia (No. 6), another team with a compelling argument for playoff inclusion is also on the outside looking in.
The Wolverines and Huskies were considered a virtual shoo-in to make the CFP as the undefeated conference champions. Michigan is in the playoffs for the third time in a row. Washington, on the other hand, has been to the CFP just once before, losing in the semifinals in the 2016 season.
The road to the playoffs for Texas and Alabama was a bit bumpy.
Texas is back in the national championship race after booking its first trip to the playoffs. Led by the quarterback Queen YearsThe Longhorns went 12-1 and won the Big 12 Championship in their first appearance in the conference title game since returning in 2017. Texas suffered its only loss Oklahoma In the Red River Rivalry game. Both schools will move to the SEC after this season, but the Longhorns have already received an SEC boost this year. Texas got perhaps its biggest win of the college football season by going on the road in September and beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama proved that a big win can sometimes make up for a first loss. The Crimson Tide are in the playoffs a day after ending Georgia’s 29-game, 728-day winning streak with a 27-24 win in the SEC Championship Game. Nick Saban’s squad faced the usual challenges for Alabama, losing to Texas in the second game of the season and otherwise struggling early in the schedule. Part of the problem was uncertainty at quarterback. Jalen Milro Started and ended the season as the team’s top QB, but both Ty Simpson And Tyler Buchner Tommy Rees was given the opportunity to take control of the position in his first year as Alabama’s offensive coordinator. Bama will now have a chance to win its fourth College Football Playoff title in the final year of the four-team format.
Its win over Georgia on Saturday changed the dynamic. At that point, it seemed like an inevitability that the SEC champion would make the playoffs, given the league’s dominance of the CFP from the start — and the relentless lobbying of both Alabama coach Nick Saban and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey over the past week to support Alabama’s case.
But the real dynamic changed on Nov. 18, when Florida State lost Travis for the season with a foot injury. The Seminoles were put under even more scrutiny to see how they would respond without their team leader and ACC Player of the Year.
First, Rodemaker leads a victory over a rival Florida Regular season off the road. Rodemaker was hurt in that game and missed the ACC Championship game against Louisville Saturday night. Enter the freshman quarterback Brock Glenn. Florida State wins again — beating the Cardinals 16-6 to claim its first ACC Championship since 2014.
Coach Mike Norvell pounded his fist on the table as he made a strong case for the Seminoles winning all their games — and doing it with three quarterbacks.
But as the offense struggled to move the ball in those two games without Travis, it became clear — at least on offense — that this team wasn’t the same. Boo Corrigan, chair of the ACC Athletic Director Selection Committee at NC State, pointed to those injuries as the main reason Florida State dropped out.
Overlooked, however, has been the play of FSU’s defense, which has been stellar since Travis got hurt. In the past two games, the Florida State defense has a combined 13 sacks — and has held its past two opponents to zero or negative yards in the fourth quarter. Florida State, which has won 19 straight games — the second-longest streak in the nation — will now head to the Orange Bowl as the ACC champion.
Travis took to social media on Sunday afternoon to lament the timing of his injury.
Devastated. Heartbroken in so much disbelief, I wish I had broken my leg early in the season so you could see this team is about more than a quarterback. I thought results mattered. 13-0 and this list matches any team in the top 4 rankings. I am very sorry. Go to Knowles!

Corrigan said the decision for the No. 4 spot was between the states of Alabama and Florida. Alabama won despite Florida State finishing with a higher power of record (No. 3) than Alabama (No. 4). The Seminoles also went 2-0 against SEC teams this season — including an emphatic victory. LSU to open the season. But in the end, what mattered to the committee was Travis’ injury.
Alabama’s win Saturday ended Georgia’s pursuit of a third straight national championship. The Bulldogs had won 29 straight games, but Saturday’s upset loss to Alabama eliminated Georgia in the SEC title game. As a result, the Bulldogs became the first No. 1 team in the final CFP rankings to fall out of the top four after losing on Championship Weekend.
