India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won regional elections on Sunday, leading in three of the four states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, along with the southern state of Telangana.
The results indicate a significant boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party ahead of the general elections, which are due to be held in six months.
Provincial elections were the last before the national polls, where Modi will seek a third term. BJP’s strong performance in the three constituencies was widely reported in various news channels.

The opposition alliance, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance or India, did not contest the state election and it was a direct contest between the BJP and the Congress.
The four states have over 160 million voters and 82 seats in the 543-member parliament.
Modi and Congress leaders, led by Rahul Gandhi, have criss-crossed the states, addressing campaign rallies and promising cash payments, farm loan waivers, subsidies and insurance cover among other incentives to woo voters. Reuters Report
Politicians and analysts say state elections do not always influence general election results or accurately indicate the mood of the national electorate.
The results of the last round of state elections before national elections have been confusing in the past.
The small northeastern state of Mizoram also voted last month and is due to be counted there on Monday.
