Advocates calling for a cease-fire in Gaza often gather outside the White House, choking back their own tears as they read the names of Palestinians killed in the war.
According to international media reports, several speakers, including Congresswoman Rashida Talib and actors Cynthia Nixon and Danny Benton, were dropped from a long list of names on Wednesday evening. But they received barely a fraction of the 15,000 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks.
Activists warned that the death toll would only rise if the current ceasefire was allowed to expire and a permanent ceasefire was not secured.
Attended by Taleb and other progressive members of Congress – the vigil was organized by activists, state lawmakers and artists on hunger strike in Washington, DC in support of a cease-fire in Gaza.
Taleb and his colleagues gathered to show support for the hunger strikers and warned that the war in Gaza must end, stressing that a temporary pause in the fighting is not enough.
“How many more lives will be enough? How many more children to kill? How many more families will be hurt and torn apart? My friends, there is nothing humane about letting innocent civilians rest for a few days before bombing them again,” Taleb said.
He has called on people to listen to President Joe Biden’s call for a ceasefire, which most Americans and Democrats support, according to polls.
Taleb, who is the only Palestinian American member of Congress, hit out at the White House for calling lawmakers “disgusting” who demanded a ceasefire early in the war.
“The bombing of innocent civilians and children is despicable and shameful. The refusal to support a ceasefire and an end to the violence and killings is despicable and shameful. Our president is calling on Congress to fund more bombs dropped on innocent civilians,” Taleb said.
Taleb stressed that leading human rights groups and Pope Francis have called for a ceasefire, insisting the claim is not controversial.
Congresswoman Cory Bush, who introduced a resolution demanding a ceasefire in the House of Representatives last month, echoed Talib’s comments, highlighting that the campaign to demand a ceasefire is making progress.
“Our movement is working. They feel our power in the White House. They listen to our demands. They see us marching in the streets. They’re watching the election,” Bush said.
The congresswoman noted that when she first introduced the resolution on Oct. 16, the measure had only 13 cosponsors. Now more than 40 lawmakers in the House and Senate have called for a cease-fire in Gaza.
“It is clear that people in our constituencies and around the world want a ceasefire,” Bush said.
Biden sparked speculation on Tuesday with a social media post that could be interpreted as a call for Israel to end the war, suggesting that violence would only increase support for Hamas.
“Hamas carried out a terrorist attack because they fear nothing more than Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace,” Biden wrote.
“Giving Hamas what it wants as it continues its path of terror, violence, killing and war.”
But White House national security spokesman John Kirby reiterated US support for Israel’s war effort later that day, suggesting the country has a “responsibility” to eliminate Hamas.
