Israeli strikes in Gaza have killed 32 Palestinians since the cease-fire expired Friday morning, Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Kidra said Friday, according to the ministry’s Telegram account.
The Israeli army issued a statement on Friday saying it had resumed fighting Hamas in the Gaza Strip, claiming the Palestinian resistance group violated the ceasefire by firing into Israeli territory, Al Jazeera reported.
Al Jazeera reporters in the Gaza Strip said airstrikes had resumed and planes could be heard circling overhead.
There were also reports of Israeli airstrikes and shelling of Gaza City.
Witnesses reported heavy clashes between Palestinian militant groups and Israeli forces in Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip.
Israeli tanks are also shelling the Nusirat and Bureij refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip.
A temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hamas that was due to expire at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Friday, Reuters added, did not announce a deal to extend it.
Israel, Hamas extend Gaza ceasefire by one day in last-minute deal
An hour before the truce ended, Israel said it had intercepted a rocket fired from Gaza, and Hamas-affiliated media reported explosions and gunfire north of the Palestinian enclave.
Minutes before the deadline, rocket warning sirens sounded again in Israeli territory near Gaza, the Israeli military said.
Hamas did not immediately comment or claim responsibility for the launch.
The seven-day truce, which began on November 24 and has been extended twice, has allowed the exchange of dozens of hostages held in Gaza for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and facilitated the entry of humanitarian aid into the shattered enclave.
Qatar and Egypt are intensifying efforts to extend the ceasefire after the exchange of eight hostages and the latest batch of 30 Palestinian prisoners on Thursday.
Israel had previously set a minimum of 10 hostages per day freed to stop ground attacks and bombardments.
“We are prepared for all possibilities… Without this, we are going back to war,” Mark Regev, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said on CNN before the truce expired.
Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas, which rules Gaza, in response to an October 7 operation by resistance groups in Israeli territory against Palestinian rights violations.
Israel retaliated with heavy bombardment and ground attacks. Palestinian health authorities have confirmed that more than 15,000 people have been killed in Gaza, considered reliable by the United Nations.
Thursday’s release brings to a total of 105 hostages and 240 Palestinian prisoners released during the ceasefire.
With fewer Israeli women and children left in captivity, prolonging the truce may require Hamas to set new terms for the release of Israeli men, including soldiers.
The militant group may seek to hand over Palestinian male prisoners. So far, three Palestinian prisoners have been freed for every Israeli hostage.
