Moviephone: To begin with, Yamazaki-san, can you talk about creating the screenplay and what you wanted to do differently with the Godzilla mythology?
Takashi Yamazaki: When I sat down to write the script I intended Godzilla to be big and massive. So, it’s hard sometimes. Sometimes the story is told where you switch to Godzilla and then you switch to the human story and they exist independently. But I really wanted to make sure that they were involved in a balanced way so that there was the right balance of human drama and whatever was going on with Godzilla. I think this in particular is a reflection of the first movie where there was a good balance between Godzilla and the human story. So, I wanted to make sure that and the other element about having that balance is that both have to be interesting otherwise one is going to win over the other, Godzilla or the human story is going to win over the other and create this imbalance.
MF: Kamiki-san, can you please discuss your character, where he is emotionally when the film opens and why he feels he has lost his honor?
Ryunsuke Kamiki: I haven’t personally experienced any combat, so coming into this film’s combat, I wasn’t really sure about my approach. I started researching and reading, talking to the director, of course, and then I also started looking at people who had experienced war and how it affected them both before they went to war and after they came back. So, I put myself in that situation emotionally and I can’t say for sure if I achieved anything, but I tried my best to survive that situation.
MF: Can you talk about the surrogate family that Shikishima creates with Noriko and Akiko and how they give him the strength to survive?
RK: I feel that before Shikishima meets Noriko and Akiko, he is asking himself, “Do I have to live, do I deserve to live?” Noriko and Akiko make a place for Shikishima and exist. Then on top of that, Godzilla returns. That errant family’s dream is kind of destroyed and Shikishima turns to revenge.

MF: Yamazaki-san, can you talk about the VFX you used to make the movie and how you wanted this version of Godzilla to look?
TY: So, when it came to designing Godzilla, for example, I was very intent on making him the strongest of all the Godzillas that came before. The great thing is that I can design Godzilla myself so I can use a 3D software tool. I wanted it to be a Godzilla where if I could find it for sale in a store, I would buy it. So, I was able to create a Godzilla to my liking. Now, the VFX, you have to remember that unlike Hollywood, Japanese budgets are generally lower and crews are usually smaller than what you get in the US but we were still aiming for Hollywood-level VFX. That’s something I’ve always done as a director, constantly testing VFX. So VFX, a lot of the time is about trial and error, but as soon as someone adjusts something, I’ll go and test. Other productions might do a check once a week or whatever, but I’m constant, I’m doing multiple checks a day. So, that’s how the VFX workflow was.
MF: Finally, for both of you, why do you think Godzilla as a character has lasted as long as it has and is still so popular around the world today?
TY: It is the idea of a creature or object that absorbs so much evil energy, or the negativity of the world, that it takes shape. And I also feel that Godzilla is what’s taking shape, and it’s up to us humans to not necessarily kill it, but to calm it down. This requires a cycle every few decades. I think, maybe we need to be reminded and go through the practice of imagining your anxiety, the evil and everything that’s going on in the world and go through the journey and go through this process of calming those negative energies. Godzilla.
RK: I think in the world of Godzilla, each generation is in their different situations and they must fight against Godzilla in that context. But I think when you go through those wars, it reflects the values of the people of that era. So, I think it’s important for people now to be able to hold a mirror up to themselves and reflect on what your values are these days. So, I think that’s what resonates with people around the world. It’s a good time to reflect on how Godzilla has been defeated by each generation, and obviously have fun.
What is the plot of ‘Godzilla Minus One’?
Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, ‘Godzilla Minus One’ takes place just after World War II, when Japan had no self-defense forces and no weapons. The movie asks: What if Godzilla comes to Japan completely unarmed? Meanwhile, after losing his honor in battle, Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) creates a surrogate family with Noriko Oishi (Minami Hamabe) just as Godzilla attacks again.
