South Korea says North Korea is building new guard posts along its border where earlier ones were dismantled and deploying troops and heavy weapons after last week’s launch of a military spy satellite.
The reported maneuvers come after South Korea said it was partially suspending a 2018 agreement intended to ease frontline military confrontations in response to the Nov. 21 Maligyong-1 satellite launch, according to the Associated Press.
The 2018 agreement required the two Koreas to stop aerial surveillance and live-fire exercises in the no-fly and buffer zones established along the DMZ, as well as remove some of their front-line guard posts and land mines. The deal leaves 50 board guard posts and South Korea North Korea with 150.
After North Korea claimed to have put its first military spy satellite into orbit, South Korea said it would partially suspend the agreement and resume aerial surveillance along the DMZ. South Korea said its response was “a minimum defensive measure” as the launch showed the North’s intention to strengthen its surveillance of the South and improve its missile technology.

But North Korea immediately condemned South Korea’s decision, saying it would deploy powerful weapons along the border, the AP reported.
On Monday, South Korea’s military released images showing North Korean troops building new guard posts, while South Korea’s defense ministry announced it was ready to “immediately and severely punish” any escalation from the North.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff acknowledged the apparent success of launching the Maligyong-1 satellite into orbit last Wednesday, though they stopped short of confirming that it was operational.
“After extensive analysis of its flight path and other signs, the satellite is assessed to have entered orbit,” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
