Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb released a statement saying he was “both saddened and outraged” after a shooting Saturday night at an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony that drew hundreds of spectators, leaving two people injured.
“Last night, what should have been an evening of celebration ended in tragedy when two teenagers were shot in a large fight that broke out after Cleveland’s annual tree lighting event in Public Square,” said Bibb, a Democrat, 3 News reported.
The Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) said two victims, ages 15 and 13, were taken to the hospital. At 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, shots were fired in Public Square. A suspect was quickly taken into custody but neither the juvenile nor the suspect has been identified.
The mayor added: “I am both saddened and outraged by this senseless violence. Enough is enough. It is time to break the cycle of violence and find better ways to resolve conflict. Clevelanders deserve to feel safe.”

A second suspect was also taken into custody, according to the mayor’s statement, which was released Sunday afternoon. Both suspects are juveniles.
“I am grateful to the officers of the CDP for their quick and effective response. The CDP quickly identified and took into custody two juvenile suspects, both of whom will be arraigned at the County Prosecutor’s Office. The two victims, ages 15 and 13, were taken to the hospital. One is in critical condition. critical; the other is stable,” Biebs said, per 3News.

According to police, officers were responding to a fight involving a large group of juveniles that began after the event when they found two injured juveniles.
