A suspect was arrested Sunday in connection with a shooting near the University of Vermont that injured three American college students of Palestinian descent.
Jason J. Eaton, 48, was taken into custody at the scene of the shooting Sunday afternoon Burlington, Vermont, Burlington police said in a press release. Police searched his nearby apartment and found probable cause, and Eaton was arrested Sunday night. He is expected to be arraigned on Monday morning.
The University of Vermont said it has “no indication” that the shooting is connected to the institution and that it regrets the incident.
Three college students, Hisham Awartani of Brown University, Kinnan Abdelhamid of Haverford University and Tahsin Ahmed of Trinity University, were shot and wounded on Saturday around 6:30 p.m. while on their way to a Thanksgiving holiday gathering. The students were visiting the home of a relative of the victims and were confronted by a white man with a handgun while eating dinner, police said.

According to police, the shooting occurred in front of Eaton’s apartment building.
Police earlier said the gunman opened fire on the suspects “without speaking.” Two of the victims were wearing the keffiyeh, a traditional scarf worn by some in the Middle East. The Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee said they were speaking Arabic at the time of the shooting.
The three victims, all in their 20s, remain hospitalized as of Monday morning.
Two of the dead were US citizens, the third was a legal US resident.
The Albany, New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement Sunday night that it had The shooting is under investigation.
“The FBI continues to actively investigate the shooting in Burlington along with our partners at the Burlington Police Department, ATF and other federal, state and local agencies,” the statement said. “Our office deployed numerous technical, forensic and investigative resources in support of the investigation, to include victim services and computer and cell phone analysis.”
The Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee previously called on federal law enforcement to investigate the shooting as a hate crime.
The shooting comes amid rising tensions in the US and around the world in the wake of the ongoing war in the Middle East between Israeli forces and Hamas terrorists. A temporary cease-fire agreement is in place between the two sides that includes Hamas releasing hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott, a Republican, called the shooting a tragic event in his state and wished the victims a speedy recovery.

“My thoughts are with them and their families,” the governor said in a statement. “I offer the mayor and Burlington police chief the state’s full support as this senseless crime is investigated, and the support of the Palestinian and greater Burlington community. Our federal partners stand ready to assist as well.”
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent representing Vermont, said it was “shocking and deeply disturbing that three young Palestinians were shot here in Burlington, Vt.”
“There is no place for hate here or anywhere. I look forward to a full investigation. My thoughts are with them and their families,” Sanders wrote on social media.
