Israel’s prison service said 39 Palestinian prisoners were released on Sunday under the terms of a cease-fire deal, while Hamas handed over 17 prisoners on the third day of a cease-fire with Israel.
Hamas said on Sunday it had handed over 13 Israeli hostages, three Thai nationals and a man with Russian citizenship to the Red Cross in the Gaza Strip on the third day of a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
The killing of a Palestinian farmer in the central Gaza Strip had earlier raised concerns about the fragility of the ceasefire.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said the farmer was killed by Israeli forces targeting Gaza’s long-established Magazi refugee camp.
Thirteen Israelis and four Thai nationals arrived in Israel early Sunday following the second release of hostages held by Hamas after an initial delay due to a dispute over aid distribution to Gaza.
Egypt and Qatar acted as mediators to maintain the ceasefire on Saturday.
Hamas’s armed wing also said on Sunday that four of its military commanders had been martyred in the Gaza Strip, including the commander of the North Gaza Brigade, Ahmed al-Ghandour. It is not stated when they were martyred.
Qatar, Egypt and the United States are pushing to extend the ceasefire beyond Monday, but it is unclear if that will happen.
