Tears of joy rolled down her cheeks, and with a look of utter disbelief, Sawsan Bakir ran up the stairs to greet her 24-year-old daughter, Marah, who was released after eight years in Israeli prison.
Marah Bakr was one of 39 Palestinian women and children released from Israeli prisons on Friday in exchange for 13 Hamas prisoners under a Qatar-brokered deal that included a four-day ceasefire in Gaza.
“I told you Marah is beautiful,” Saosan told reporters, as he hugged his daughter and kissed her endlessly. “Not because she’s my daughter, really, but Marah is beautiful, and you’ll see for yourself.”
Before her imprisonment, Bakr was a 16-year-old high school student at Al-Maimuna School in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem.
Every day, he walked from the family home in Beit Hanina to school, crossing an expressway that runs between East and West Jerusalem.
While returning home on October 12, 2015, Israeli forces shot and arrested him for allegedly trying to stab an Israeli officer. Baker and his family have denied the allegations.
When he was arrested, Bucker was lying on the sidewalk with 12 gunshot wounds to his arm and hand that left him with permanent damage. He was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison.
While a child incarcerated, Buck was scheduled to return home within four months of completing his sentence.
Newly released, Bakir told reporters that his time in prison was difficult, but that he endured it with his faith in God and the support of his family and fellow Palestinian prisoners.
“I had a hard time in prison, but anyone else who’s been through life, they’ve been through too.
Prison was especially hard because I was young [when I was jailed] And I need the love of my mother and the support of my family.
“Although there were many fellow prisoners who took care of me and helped me, nothing could replace a mother’s love,” she said as Saosan held her.
About 8,000 Palestinians remain in Israeli prisons, including 3,000 who have been detained over the past seven weeks amid an increasingly armed Israeli operation in the West Bank.
