BEIJING: China’s military said it conducted “strike drills” in the sea and airspace around Taiwan on Sunday.provocation“From democratically governed islands and the United States.
Taiwan, which China claims as its own own territoryIn the past three years or so, China has repeatedly complained of military activity as Beijing seeks to pressure Taipei into accepting Chinese sovereignty.
China staged war games around Taiwan in August after then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei, and on Saturday it slammed the US for a new defense authorization law that boosts military aid to Taiwan.
In a brief statement, China’s People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theater Command said it conducted “joint combat readiness patrols and joint firepower strike drills” around Taiwan, though it did not specify the exact location.
“This is a strong response to the current escalation of collusion and provocation from the United States and Taiwan,” it added, without elaborating.
“The theater forces will take all necessary measures to firmly protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Taiwan’s defense ministry declined immediate comment.
The ministry released a daily report at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) on Chinese military activity near the island in the past 24 hours.
The United States is Taiwan’s most important international supporter and arms supplier, despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations. US arms sales to Taiwan are a constant irritant to Beijing’s relationship with Washington.
Taiwan’s military dwarfs that of its giant neighbor China. Its air force in particular has come under pressure over the past three years or so, with repeated scrambles to stop Chinese incursions near the island.
The Chinese exercise coincided with Taiwan’s newly elected city mayors and county heads taking their positions after local elections on the island last month, in which the ruling Democratic Progressive Party was defeated.
China has never abandoned the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control. Taiwan strongly opposes China’s claim to sovereignty, saying that only the island’s 23 million people can determine their future.
