KARACHI: Pakistan’s newly appointed chief selector Shahid Afridi has hinted at the inclusion of pacers. Mir Hamza and wicket-keeper batsmen Sarfraz Ahmed Pakistan’s final XI for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.
It was Afridi Appointment of Interim Chief Selector Chairman of the management committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board on Saturday Nazam Shetty After the disbandment of the selection committee led by Mohammad Wasim after the change in PCB regime.
Afridi’s first big decision – taken a day earlier in consultation with captain Babar Azam – was to include Hamza, Sajid Khan and Shahnawaz Dahani in Pakistan’s Test squad for the home series.
Talking to reporters on Sunday, Afridi said the players have been included considering the performance and strength of Pakistan.
“I have come to know that Naseem Shah is not fully fit, so it was good to add two fast bowlers to the team and we have been carrying Dahani for so long, when will he get a chance?”
“Also, since Shaheen is not around, it was important to have a left-hander so Hamza was included,” Afridi said adding that the fast bowler has performed well and is fit to play now.
Afridi added that workload management of players is important and this is something that Babar also emphasized.
“We have players who are constantly playing in all formats. We have to strengthen the bench so that there is no problem if one is rested,” said the former captain.
Aspiration for Babur
He also mentioned that the team has some seniors who have been warming the bench for a long time. “I am meeting Babar Azam tonight and we will discuss how to move.”
Afridi also added that he wants to see Babar among the great captains and he will support him to become a good captain as a batsman as good as him.
He also stressed the need for a revolutionary approach in cricket, saying Pakistan should move on from the old-school thinking of preparing ordinary wickets.
“We can definitely prepare pitches like South Africa or Australia. Why do we keep preparing the same slow-turn wicket every time? We have taken good wickets in the past, we can do it again, if we continue to adopt the old-school mentality, we will not be the top team,” he concluded.
