United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres urged the interim government of Afghanistan not to allow terrorist organizations to use Afghan soil to launch attacks in Pakistan and called on the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the international community. Supporting Pakistan to cope with the increased devastation of abnormal floods.
Speaking at a year-end press conference at UN headquarters in New York, Guterres said the UN was negotiating with the interim authority in Afghanistan.
He said they believe the Taliban must deliver from the perspective of the interests of the international community and the interests of Afghanistan.
The UNSG also called on the IMF, the World Bank and the international community to support Pakistan in dealing with the aftermath of the devastating floods that hit the country in July-September.
Talking about its expectations from the January 9 Geneva conference aimed at gathering support for the flood-hit country for rehabilitation work, the UNSG said Pakistan needed strong support as one-third of the country was under water.
The Secretary-General will co-host the Geneva conference with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Guterres said he was in touch with the IMF and the World Bank and hoped that these organizations would undertake significant efforts to support Pakistan.
The UN chief said the Pakistani people deserve and need a strong expression of international solidarity as 33 million have been affected by the floods and more than 1700 people have died.
UNSG visit to Pakistan
In September, the UNSG conducted a two-day solidarity visit to Pakistan amid devastating floods. He visited the flood-hit areas and stressed the need for developed countries to help Pakistan, saying aid from international agencies was “a drop in the ocean” compared to what was needed to rebuild.
The UN secretary-general was overwhelmed by the devastation engulfing Pakistan while visiting camps in flood-hit areas and sweltering heat, Prime Minister Shehbaz said.
He said, the voice of the UN Secretary General has become the voice of the flood victims.
Emphasizing the need for international support to deal with natural disasters and curb carbon emissions, the Prime Minister said the world should pay attention to what he said on climate change.
