San Salvador: savior A military operation against drug dealers in San Salvador communities began on Christmas Eve, the government said Saturday, part of the country’s controversial effort to combat criminal gangs.
The government has deployed 1,000 soldiers and about 130 police officers who have been participating since dawn in a raid on the impoverished Tutunichapa community. President Naib Bukel said on Twitter.
Security forces arrested 23 suspected criminals from the community in El Salvador’s capital, known for drug trafficking and who had already faced military intervention in October 2020.
The government said in a statement later Saturday that they found firearms, more than $10,000 in cash and “a large quantity of marijuana and crack packages.”
“All terrorists, drug traffickers and gang members will be removed from this community. Honest citizens have nothing to fear and can continue to live their lives as normal,” Buckel tweeted.
Buckel’s government has drastically reduced the number of murders in the Central American country, but non-profit organizations have criticized the government for “abuse” in its crackdown on gangs.
