Second day in Paris On Saturday, police and Kurdish protesters were angered by the killing of three community members by a gunman.
Cars were overturned, protesters burned at least one car, shop windows were damaged and small fires were lit near Republic Square, a traditional protest site where Kurds have previously held peaceful protests.
Paris police chief Laurent Nunez said the protests had suddenly turned violent, but it was unclear why.
Police have arrested a 69-year-old man who authorities say was recently released from detention while awaiting trial for a saber attack on a migrant camp in Paris a year ago.
After questioning the suspect, investigators added a suspected racist motive to the initial charges of murder and violence with a weapon, the prosecutor’s office said Saturday.
However, the interrogation was later stopped for medical reasons, and the man was transferred to a psychiatric unit, the prosecutor’s office said in an update.
It added that the suspect will be produced before the investigating magistrate when his health permits.
After a rally on Friday afternoon that led to clashes with police, the Kurdish Democratic Council France (CDK-F) organized the protest at Republic Square on Saturday.
Hundreds of Kurdish protesters, joined by politicians including the mayor of Paris’s 10th arrondissement, waved flags to pay their respects to the victims.
“We are not being protected at all. In 10 years, six Kurdish activists have been killed in broad daylight in the heart of Paris,” CDK-F spokesman Berivan Firat told BFM TV at the protest.
He said the incident worsened after some demonstrators provoked some protesters by making pro-Turkish gestures at a passing car.
Friday’s killings came before the anniversary of the killing of three Kurdish women in Paris in January 2013.
An inquest was dropped after the main suspect died shortly before going to trial before reopening in 2019.
Kurdish representatives, who met with Nunez and French Justice Minister Eric DuPont-Moretti on Saturday, reiterated their call for Friday’s shooting to be treated as a terrorist attack.
