The past few years haven’t been kind to San Diego’s grand celebration of pop culture, Funny memorization. Despite a high point in the early 2000s where huge crowds flocked to hear new developments in the franchise such as ‘twilight‘ and Marvel Cinematic UniverseThe vision of the event as a premium launching point for new movies and TV shows has been a recent hit
And the Covid pandemic, which reduced the 2020 and 2021 editions of the event to a scattered virtual shadow of its former self, didn’t help.
But hopes were raised last year by a massively triumphant return (with its traditional big panel Marvel is announcing its upcoming slate and trotting out stars and producers to generate buzz), it appears the biggest issue on Hollywood’s mind right now will affect which companies bring something to the event.
Delay in Writers’ Strike
According to A new story on The Wrap, Marvel in particular decided to make it a skip year, opting not to bring any of its shows or movies to the massive Hall H space where it was traditionally a highlight of the four-day event. It will still have a presence on the con’s trade show floor, though.
Although attendance was reduced due to the studio not being seen before (or saving some big releases for the parent company Disney’s own D23 eventwhich falls after Con’s July date), the writers’ strike is said to be behind the new move.

And it’s not just the writers — the acting union SAG-AFTRA has yet to make its own deal with the studios, and that means talent on strike is unavailable to take to the stage because they’re barred from promotional duties while engaged in art work. That would also have a detrimental effect on projects that Marvel could conceivably promote, including ‘Captain Marvel‘next’Marvels‘

Other companies?
Marvel isn’t alone in this decision, as The Wrap also points out that Universal and HBO Other names mentioned as pondering whether to show up this year include
HBO is perhaps understandable, since its own parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, is on a serious cost-cutting spree (with reports that it is looking into Licensing major HBO series for viewers to watch on Netflix Brides may not want to splash the cash to bring in talent if hotel accommodation and other expenses are too high to raise additional income). And, like Marvel, companies are also seeing projects pushed back due to the strike.
Comic-Con is still scheduled to run from Thursday, July 20 to Sunday, July 23, but it looks like the impact will be less this year.
