Premiering hulu And Disney+,’flamin hot‘ tells its fascinating true story Richard MontanezA man who rose from a life of struggle and hit upon a brilliant idea for an untapped market in the chip industry, made his life’s dreams come true.
What is the story of ‘Flamin’ Hot’?
The movie tells the story of Montanez.Jesse Garcia), who was born in the late 1950s to Mexican-American parents in an East Los Angeles barrio community. He had a smart mind, an ambitious soul and a dream for a better life. He dropped out of school in his mid-teens – one of his biggest regrets – only to discover that the only jobs he could get without a high school diploma or college education were as window washers and gas station attendants. This was not what he wanted for himself or his future.
It was his persistence that eventually landed him a janitorial gig at a local Frito-Lay factory. At work, his inquisitive mind wanted to know more about how snacks are made and about machines and production lines, which made his colleagues and his supervisors suspicious. Who was this man who dared to think that he was someone he was not and who wanted more from his life?
Although his colleagues told him that his chances of meeting the CEO were as high as flying to the moon, Montez wanted to make sure his ideas were top notch. PepsiCo CEO Roger Enrico (Tony Shalhoub) was on site for a factory tour. Amazingly, the man with no formal education and no business marketing training or tools managed to get a moment’s notice with the boss, who was interested enough to make a formal presentation. The rest is history, Montanez’s idea led him to join the company’s executive ranks.
Who else is ‘flamin’ hot?
There is also a cast Annie Gonzalez Judy Montanez as Richard’s wife, Dennis Haysbert As a consultant to Frito-Lee Richard, Clarence C. unemployed, Matt Walsh As her boss, Lonnie Mason, Bobby Soto Richard’s friend Tony Romero and Emilio Rivera As his father, Cow Mountain.
Breaking stereotypes
Although there was some debate in 2021 as to whether Montanez’s story really holds up (Frito-Lay expressed skepticism as the story stood, as reported in this LA Times piece) There’s no denying that he was instrumental in expanding the company’s product flavors to appeal to Latino audiences. And that doesn’t diminish the power of the movie.
Longoria may be making her feature directorial debut here, but she brings a wealth of experience both in front of and behind the camera — an extensive acting resume, and work on everything from dramatic choices to producing and directing TV series like ‘Black-‘ Ish’ and ‘Jane the Virgin’ in a more comedic tone with ‘Grand Hotel’, which combines the two.
Here, he whips through Montanez’s narrative, touching on important parts and never abandoning the love he shows for his family and the struggles he and his wife go through. And the movie even acknowledges how Montanez had to hustle in a less-than-legal fashion early on, especially while disrupting and debating common misconceptions about Mexican culture. It’s a story of determination and passion, of a supportive family that defies standard TV and movie representations of Latino culture as gang bangers or immigrants.
Highlights of ‘Flamin’ Hot’ include García’s captivating lead performance as Montanez, telling his life story in a way that keeps you interested, and Linda Yvette Chavez’s script works well.
Haysbert also gets a solid push as Clarence, a proud, gifted engineer who maintains the machines in the plant where Montanez cleans the floors. Finding something in the ambitious man, he mentors him to success, even as he himself wants to be at the executive level and is disappointed that some of the people he trained have been promoted above him. Her and Richard’s relationship is much more equal and warm, the sheer enthusiasm and openness of Montanez’s approach breaking down Clarence’s barriers and proving a boon to them both.
Shalhoub, meanwhile, is good value in a relatively small (but still important) role as Frito-Lay’s CEO, one of the people who inspires Richard to dream big. And he’s the focus of quick, funny scenes in which Richard imagines how company executives get the job done, with staff suits transformed into gangsters who threaten each other in a cartoony voice provided by Richard.
It’s a movie that’s made a lot, but rarely about people who look like Richard Montanez and his family, which is more remarkable. And while it’s unfortunate that Disney’s Searchlight decision has chosen to push it to Hulu, it has a chance to reach a wider audience than a limited engagement in theaters.
Not so tasty
It’s not a perfect movie –– you’ll definitely find moments where the budget outstrips the ambitions of Longoria and her team, along with some awkward wig moments and scenes that could have been excised without losing any of the film’s flavor.
A compelling, funny and charming story well told, ‘Flamin’ Hot’ at times feels like it needed to be a limited series rather than a movie, so full of events were the lives of its subjects.
But if it inspires just one or two people to go the extra mile to chase their dreams, it will be a worthwhile film, even if you’re not looking for a new direction in life.
‘Flamin’ Hot’ has 7.5 out of 10 stars.
