New York:
Rose Zhang won the Mizuho Americas Open in her professional debut on Sunday, defeating Jennifer Kupcho in the second playoff hole, a rare feat. LPGA history
The 20-year-old American, who has been the world’s number one amateur for 141 weeks, became the first player to win the LPGA title since Beverly Hanson did so in 1951.
“What’s going on? I can’t believe it,” Zhang said after making a par on the 18th second playoff hole at Liberty National in Jersey City, New Jersey.
“It was last week when I won the NCAA with my teammates,” said the player who won his second straight US collegiate title in his last amateur hurrah. “To be a pro and come here, it’s just amazing.”
Zhang, who also won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur this year, opened with a two-stroke lead, but couldn’t find a birdie on another cold and blustery day, although she made a clutch par putt for a two-over-par 74. 279 total for under.
kupcho It was in the clubhouse at 279 after a three-under 69 when Zhang headed into the 72nd hole with a one-shot lead, making a testing par-saving putt on just 17.
Zhang was in the left fairway bunker off the tee and couldn’t drop his par-saving putt, and he and Kupcho returned to the 18th tee for a playoff.
After both made par on the first playoff hole, both found the fairway on the second. Zhang kept his approach to within eight feet of the pin when Kupcho’s second shot hung about 60 feet in front of the green.
Kupcho putted past and beyond the green and Zhang had the luxury of two-putting to win.
“This golf course is rough,” Zhang said of a layout that didn’t yield a bogey-free round Sunday. “I’ve really had a bit of everything, tasted the pressure, tasted the wind and I’ve tried to stay composed as always.
“I know that golf was just a grind and you have to really dig deep. Again, that’s what I did.”
The victory gives Zhang an immediate option for LPGA Tour membership. Made 13 starts on tour as a professional with eight major championships, including a tie for 11th at the 2020 Chevron Championship.
After his bogey on the par-three fourth, Zhang reeled off 12 straight pars, missing a short birdie putt on 16 that would have given him a two-shot cushion.
South Korea’s Ryu Hae-ran is tied for third after 70 on 280, followed by Japan’s Ayaka Furu, South Korea’s Ji Eun-hee and India’s Aditi Ashok on 281.
