Defending champion Iga Suatek had a quick and easy route to the French Open quarterfinals on Monday. Her opponent, Ukraine’s Lesia Surenko, retired from the match after feeling unwell.
Swetek was leading 4-1 in the first set when Surenko called the trainer to check his blood pressure and pulse. After a brief medical timeout, the match resumed, but Shurenko decided to quit after losing the next game to Love.
Tsurenko apologized to Swatek and explained that he had been dealing with a virus for several days. Despite his best efforts to prepare for the match, he could not overcome his bad condition. Tsurenko mentioned a sore throat and being able to exercise for only 10 minutes the previous day. He believed he needed a few more days to recover.
Swiatek’s next opponent in the quarterfinals will be American player Coco Gough, setting up a rematch of last year’s final, which Swiatek won convincingly. Swatek has spent just over four hours on court so far in the tournament, dropping just nine games. He is aiming for his third French Open title in four years.
Surenko, ranked 66th in the world, struggled from the start of the match against Svitek. Once he was able to break through, his physical condition continued to deteriorate rapidly. He sought the help of a trainer and was allowed to continue playing, but it became clear that he was not at his best and decided to retire.
Swetek expressed his disappointment at winning the match this way, but he acknowledged the importance of managing his energy throughout the tournament. He feels more prepared and less tired this time around, relying on his experience to handle the demands of a Grand Slam event.
Suetek’s quarter-final berth at the French Open is expected given the defending champion and world number one status. However, he jokingly noted that reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon would make him extremely happy. Goff, his next opponent, secured his place in the quarterfinals with a straight sets victory. Last year, Swatek defeated Goff in the finals to win the championship title.
