Washington:
of Norway Victor Hovland The first extra hole to defeat American Denny McCarthy in a playoff on Sunday to win the Memorial Tournament for his fourth US PGA Tour title.
The 25-year-old from Oslo, runner-up at last month’s PGA Championship, has not won on tour since the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico.
Seventh-ranked Hovland, the only player on Sunday to birdie the 17th hole, and McCarthy, whose only bogey came on the 18th, each shot two-under par 70s to finish 72 holes at seven-under 281 at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
In a playoff on the par-4 18th hole, McCarthy found the right rough and pitched to the fairway while Hovland reached the green in two. McCarthy missed a par putt from just 12 feet for the trophy and Hovland sank a par putt from just seven feet for the trophy.
“I’m playing well. I’m just trying to stay within myself and play my game. Maybe I shouldn’t have shot before hitting some pins.
“I just played smart, played my game and was clutch this time.”
Hovland contended late before settling for seventh at the Masters and tied for third at the Players Championship in March, as well as his PGA runner-up effort, making the memory victory all the sweeter.
“Feeling better after a few close calls in the last few months,” he said. “It’s fun to win without hitting one of those balls. Now I can rely on some other strengths.”
It was a gut-wrenching loss for McCarthy, who was settling for his best PGA Tour result. He bogeyed the final holes with clutch par putts to only bogey 18 in regulation and a playoff after missing the fairway off the tee.
“I fought really hard,” McCarthy said. “Heartbroken right now, but a lot of positives to take from this week. My putter kept me in it when I was a little shaky. Played a lot of good golf shots this week.”
On a day where the average score climbed above 75, top-ranked Scotty Scheffler — who made the cut and began Sunday with a five-stroke drop — shot a 67 to finish third at 282, one shot out of a playoff.
South Korea’s Kim Si-woo, the 54-hole co-leader, was fourth after closing on 73 with American Jordan Spieth and Andrew Putnam on 284 and American Andrew Schenck on 285 with 54-hole co-leader Rory McIlroy, who stumbled. ate 75.

Hovland found the greenside rough on 18 but saved par from within six feet and reached a playoff when McCarthy found the left rough and missed a 23-foot par putt on his 72nd hole.
“I didn’t feel like I hit it my best all week,” Hovland said. “I played really smart, really conservative. I really relied on my short game and I played great this week.”
McCarthy, who finished 55th, was best before finishing third at the 2021 Honda Classic
Kim, world No. 38, for his fifth PGA Tour win, found water off the 14th tee and made double bogey to fall back.
Scheffler, last year’s Masters champion and winner of this year’s Players Championship, made six birdies in the first 16 holes but found a greenside bunker on 17 and made his lone bogey to miss the playoff.
Four-time major winner McIlroy, who won in Dubai in January, had seven bogeys — three in a row on 12-14 — against four birdies.
