Former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi criticized the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for allegedly making excuses about his participation in the Asia Cup matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Media reports have suggested that Bangladeshi players are unwilling to play the tournament in the UAE due to concerns about the scorching weather in September.
Afridi’s comments came after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send its team to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup. In an attempt to break the deadlock, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) proposed a hybrid model for the tournament, splitting it into two phases. The first phase will be held in Pakistan excluding India and the second phase will be held in the United Arab Emirates.
Talking about the weather concerns, Afridi stressed that professional cricketers should not make decisions to play based on weather conditions alone.
“If you are a professional cricketer, don’t play depending on the weather. We played the match in Sharjah at 10 am. We were dizzy when we went towards the boundary line. It used to be so hot. These things happen but it also tests your fitness level,” Afridi told a local TV channel.
“If you want to make an excuse, you can come up with anything like it’s too hot in the UAE. I think these are excuses,” he added.
Meanwhile, according to an Indian media report, BCCI secretary and ACC chairman Jai Shah has made it clear to other countries that they will not accept the “hybrid model” proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Shah recently discussed it with the heads of member nations and suggested that the tournament should be held at a single venue, specifically in Sri Lanka.
The report also said that the next meeting of the ACC Executive Board will inform Pakistan that all other participating nations have agreed to play in Sri Lanka.
PCB, as the designated host, must comply and play in Sri Lanka or withdraw. In that case, the four teams India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will participate, the inclusion of the fifth team is yet to be decided.
