The more students feel that it is ‘not okay’ to seek help, the greater the likelihood of potentially serious consequences for their mental well-being (representative figure).
Mental health concerns have existed for centuries but are becoming more prevalent as general awareness of these needs spreads and schools begin to train their staff on how to identify and support students who need help.
According to the World Health Organization, mental health is “a state of health in which each person realizes his or her own potential, copes with the normal stresses of life, works productively and productively, and is able to contribute to his or her community.” , working productively, realizing our potential, everything seems simple, right? Not for everyone.
Mental health concerns have been around for centuries but are becoming more prevalent as general awareness of these needs spreads and schools begin to train their staff on how to identify and support students who need help.
Unfortunately, these issues are often seen as taboo subjects in communities around the world. Families often find it difficult to accept that their child may need additional support for their well-being, which makes it even more important for schools to ensure that they have appropriate staff training to facilitate the identification and referral process.
Identifying these anxieties in teenagers is not always easy because teens often find different ways to mask their symptoms and hide from those around them. The more students feel that it is ‘not okay’ to seek help, the more likely it is to have potentially serious consequences for their mental well-being. Some of the most common problems among adolescents found in schools can include anxiety and depression, as well as behavioral and eating disorders.
So what do we look out for? Common symptoms include but are not limited to:
● Sudden changes in mood or behavior
● Withdrawal or avoidance of social situations with family or friends
● Unexplained physical changes such as weight loss or gain
● Changes in sleeping habits
● Self-harm
Most importantly, once support needs are identified, what can we do as teachers and caregivers to change and give these teens the support they need?
It’s simple.
connect
Relationship building is central to establishing the trust teenagers need to trust an adult in their lives. It’s important that teens feel that it’s normal to have a mental health problem and that seeking help is the right thing to do to get the help they need. To do this, teachers and caregivers must find ways to connect and build trust with their teens. Don’t be afraid to open up and share a bit about yourself. Let your teen see you as a person.
Provide a safe space
Teachers and caregivers should create an environment that is welcoming for their adolescent, creating a sense of belonging at home and/or in the classroom. Teens should feel confident when they come to talk to you that they won’t face criticism, discrimination, or judgment. Your space should be free of personal bias, so students feel safe and respected.
be present
Sometimes it just takes giving your teen time. Show them you are there for them through the good and the bad. As a teacher, make time during the school day to stop and ask your students how they are feeling. As a parent or caregiver, set aside time for purposeful family dinners, activities, or evening hangouts to share about your day to set up a platform for your teen to share.
