“I coached one of the best in the world, not a forward, but a complete footballer,” the coach continued.
“Very friendly, humble, serious person. We cannot be happy that he is leaving, but we have to respect his decision. What he has done at this club is legendary and unforgettable.”
Athletic were the stronger side and only a stunning Thibaut Courtois penalty was denied by Mikel Vesga to keep his side at the break.
Oihan Sunset put the visitors ahead early in the second half but Benzema netted from the spot when Eder Militao was awarded a soft penalty for a foul.
It was the 35-year-old’s 354th goal in the Spanish capital since moving from Lyon in 2009.
Benzema, who has won five Champions League titles and La Liga four times, looks set to play in Saudi Arabia, where former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo has moved.
