Kosovan Olympic Committee (KOC) International Olympic Committee (IOC) and international tennis Federation (ITF) to take disciplinary action against Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic.
On Monday, Djokovic put a political message into the lens of TV cameras French Open In response to the violent conflict in Kosovo, writing: “Kosovo is [heart symbol] of Serbia. Stop the violence in Serbian.
In a letter written by KOC president Ismet Krasnicki and addressed to the IOC, the KOC said Djokovic’s message “violated the fundamental principles of the IOC Charter on political neutrality and involved another political statement in sport.”
CNN has reached out to Djokovic’s representation for comment.
The KOC claimed that Djokovic had “again promoted the propaganda of Serbian nationalists and used the platform of sport to do so,” leading to “escalating levels of tension and violence between the two countries, Kosovo and Serbia.”
Tensions have been rising over the past week in Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008 Demonstrators clashed on Monday after ethnic Albanian mayors took office in northern Kosovo, a majority Kosovo Serb region, boycotted by Kosovo Serbs after April elections. .
Djokovic elaborated on his message in Serbian at a press conference this week, saying: “It’s the least I could do. I feel a responsibility as a public figure – in no case can support be given – it doesn’t matter.
“Especially as the son of a man born in Kosovo, I feel the need to give my support to our people and Serbia as a whole. I don’t know, and I think many others don’t know, what the future brings for Kosovo and the Serbian people, but in this kind of situation There is a need to show support and show unity.”
Djokovic’s reference to the “totality of Serbia” reflects the policy of the Serbian government, which still considers Kosovo an integral part of its territory and has not recognized the country’s independence.
Krasnicki warned that if no action was taken against Djokovic, it “sets a dangerous precedent that sport can be used as a platform for political messages.”
He added: “I respectfully request that the IOC respond within its framework and request the ITF to follow the principles governed by the Olympic Charter and investigate this matter by taking a disciplinary action against this athlete.”
In a statement sent to CNN, an ITF spokesperson said: “We have received and acknowledged a letter from the Kosovo Tennis Federation and forwarded it to the relevant Grand Slam authorities.
“The rules of conduct of players at a Grand Slam event are governed by the Grand Slam Rulebook, which is administered by the relevant organizers and regulators. It has no provision to prohibit political speech.”
The IOC told CNN that the French Open is governed by the relevant Grand Slam authorities and governed by their rules.
“Athletes are under the authority of the IOC only during the Olympic Games,” it said.
Djokovic will play Hungary’s Marton Fucsovic in the second round of the French Open on Wednesday.
