One of the most prestigious tennis Outside of the four Grand Slam tournaments, the Madrid Open attracts the biggest names in the sport.
However, this year’s edition has attracted as much attention for the controversy off the court as it has for the action on the clay surface.
During the Masters 1000 event – which ended over the weekend Carlos Alcaraz And Arina Sabalenka Crowning of men’s and women’s singles champions – Organizers were criticized for wearing crop tops and short skirts by ball girls on the main court.
After the backlash, skirts were swapped for long shorts in Sunday’s final, but crop tops remained.
“It’s a feminine way of treating girls versus boys who don’t dress like that,” Pilar Calvo, a spokeswoman for The Association for Women in Professional Sports, told Spanish outlet Publico.
“Ultimately, it’s a form of sexist violence that’s so pervasive because people don’t notice it.”
The sexism row didn’t stop there, however, with players in Sunday’s women’s doubles final accusing the organizers of not allowing them to speak after the match.
Neither the winners – Beatriz Haddad Maia and Victoria Azarenka – nor the losers – US pair Jessica Pegula and Coco Gough – gave acceptance speeches.
“Not given a chance to talk after the final today,” Goff sadly tweeted, while Azarenka added that it was “hard to convince Leo that mum can’t say hello to him at the trophy ceremony.”
“I don’t know what century everyone was living in when they made this decision,” Pegula added, according to the BBC. “Or how they had the conversation and decided, ‘Wow, that’s a great decision and there’s not going to be any backlash against it.’
“I’ve never heard in my life that we can’t talk. It was really disappointing. For $10,000 [lower level] Say the last word.
“It spoke for itself. We were upset when it happened and said during the trophy ceremony that we couldn’t talk. It’s kind of proven.”
World No 7 and last year’s winner Ounce Jabeur called it “sad and unacceptable” and former Grand Slam doubles champion Renae Stubbs called it “disrespectful”.
“We sincerely apologize to all players and fans who expect more from the Madrid Open,” Madrid Open CEO and tournament organizer Gerard Sobanian said in a statement.
“Not allowing our women’s doubles finalists to address their fans at the end of the match was unacceptable and we apologize directly to Victoria, Beatriz, Coco and Jessica.”
Azarenka criticized tournament organizers for the second time at this year’s edition of the Madrid Open after a fan posted two photos on Twitter showing the difference in the size of the birthday cakes given to Alcaraz and Sabalenka, who share a May 5 birthday.
Azarenka responded to the tweet, saying: “Couldn’t be more right about the treatment.”
That drew a response from tournament director Feliciano Lopez, a former world No. 12 and seven-time winner on the ATP Tour, who said he was “surprised by the reaction after the gesture.”
Explaining why Alcaraz got a multi-layer cake and Sabalenka a single-layer cake, Lopez said that Alcaraz had just reached the final, was playing on the main court and was the home favorite for the Spanish tournament.
“PS: I hope Rune wasn’t upset by his behavior either,” she concluded, accompanied by a winking emoji and a photo of male player Holger Rune also receiving a single tiered cake at the start of the tournament.
Lopez was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNN Sport.
