Elena Rybakina The defeated world number one Iga Swiatek Should reach straight set on Friday Indian Wells final and continued his electrifying run of form this season.
There was no answer to the Wimbledon champion’s powerful groundstrokes as the Pole was beaten 6-2 6-2 in one hour and 16 minutes.
With the win, Rybakina became the first player to win multiple matches against the reigning world No. 1 since 2019, after defeating Świątek in the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this year.
“With Iga, he is a tough, really tough opponent, but when I play this well and everything goes well – because today I played some moments, I would say, at my highest level – [these are] Moments where you feel, well, if I always play like this, I can beat anybody,” Rybakina said after her win.
“But that’s the goal, every match you never feel amazing and perfect. I think it was really good from me today.”
The world number 10 was dominant from the start, breaking Świątek at the first opportunity to win the first set in just 36 minutes.
Rybakina then held Świątek before going 5-0 up in the second minute and made a break to stem the tide, but the Kazakh held on to win, becoming the first player from her country to reach the singles final in tournament history. Rybakina was born in Russia but has represented Kazakhstan since 2018
Former professional tennis player Pam Shriver tweeted, “If you’re down on the planet tonight and hear #1 playing, it’s Rybakina.”
Świątek later revealed that he was managing a rib injury and “not feeling 100% physically”, although he still planned to play at the Miami Open next week.
“Honestly, I haven’t played much with injuries,” he added. “It’s a new situation for me, for sure. The last time I played with an injury, the only tournament I remember was Roland Garros 2019. So I was quite young.
“Now it’s a whole different level. So I think you have to be 100% fit to go into those matches.”
Rybakina will now face Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka for the Indian Wells title in a repeat of this year’s Australian Open final.
