The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has “formally warned” Russian tennis player Anastasia Potapova after she was seen wearing a Spartak Moscow soccer jersey ahead of her match against American Jessica Pegula in Indian Wells, a spokeswoman told CNN on Thursday.
World No.1 Iga Świątek criticized the WTA In order to let Potapova wear the shirt, Tuesday said that “more should be done to help Ukrainian players because what we discuss in tennis is about Belarusian and Russian players.”
Potopova is pictured wearing the shirt at several events, including in Dubai, in a photo posted on her own Instagram account.
Asked about the shirt after the match, Potapova said she had supported Spartak since she was 13 and saw no provocation in it, Reuters news agency reported.
In an email to CNN, WTA spokeswoman Amy Binder said: “Regarding the Russian soccer team’s shirt, the WTA has officially warned the player that this is not an acceptable or appropriate action.
“We don’t expect to see any repeats of this in the future.”
CNN has sought further clarification from the WTA on what the official warning was and has also reached out to Potapover’s agent for comment.
Ukrainian player Lesia Surenko was scheduled to play Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in Indian Wells, California but did not end up on court on Monday, Reuters news agency reported that Surenko withdrew for personal reasons.
Asked about Surenko in his post-match press conference on Tuesday, 21-year-old Polish star Świątek said: “I completely understand why she moved, because honestly I respect Ukrainian girls so much, because if there’s a bomb in me like a bomb If the country or my house were destroyed, I don’t know if I could handle it.”
On Wednesday, when asked about Świątek’s comments, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev said he was sorry for Ukrainian players competing in their country over the fury of the war.
The 2021 US Open winner added: “For sure, Surenko’s situation, I don’t know in detail. It’s more for him and maybe for Sabalenka to answer a bit, because I actually didn’t know about it until the next day.
“Obviously we have a responsibility (to talk about the issue) and it’s up to each individual, individual, how to do it.
“I’ve always said the same thing, I’m for peace all over the world and that’s all I can say.”
According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), at least 8,231 civilians were killed and 13,734 injured as of March 12 in the Russian offensive in Ukraine, which began on February 24 last year.
OHCHR said it believed the actual figures were “significantly higher, as there have been delays in receiving information from places where intense hostilities are ongoing and many reports are still pending.”
