The death toll in violence in Senegal has risen to 15 as supporters of convicted opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and police continue to clash, the government said on Saturday.
According to international media reports, the clashes first erupted on Thursday, when Sonko was convicted of corrupting youths but acquitted of raping and threatening to kill a woman who worked at a massage parlour. Sonko, who did not attend his trial in Dakar, was sentenced to two years in prison. A warrant for his arrest has not yet been issued, his lawyer said.
Sonko came third in Senegal’s 2019 presidential election and is popular with the country’s youth. His supporters maintain that his legal troubles are part of a government effort to derail his candidacy in the 2024 presidential election.
Sonko is considered the main challenger to President Mackie Sall and has urged Sall to say publicly that he will not seek a third term.
The international community has called on the Senegalese government to resolve tensions.
Rights groups have condemned the government crackdown, which includes arbitrary arrests and restrictions on social media. Some social media sites used by protesters to incite violence, such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter, were suspended for about two days.
