The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) The first international campus is set to open in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The institute plans to start its classes by October 2023 with 50 undergraduate (UG) and 20 postgraduate (PG) students. The institute also plans to offer programs in data science and artificial intelligence As of now, the fee structure remains uncertain, as noted in a report by IANS.
IIT’s campus in Zanzibar is likely to be completed in the next three to five years.
A special team of five professors from IIT Madras visited Tanzania in February this year and held discussions with several officials regarding the opening of the campus. President of Zanzibar Hussain Mwini has given permission for the campus and the autonomous IIT has to guarantee quality standards.
IIT Zanzibar will be one of three international campuses outside India, the others being set up in Kuala Lumpur and Abu Dhabi. Each of these campuses is planned to serve its region, with Zanzibar serving the wider East African region, according to local Tanzanian daily – The Citizen.
In February, when the IIT Madras delegation visited Tanzania, Binaya Pradhan, an Indian diplomat and India’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, shared a tweet saying, “IITs in Tanzania can be instrumental in the growth and nation building of not only Tanzania but the country. The whole continent”.
The IIT Madras team that visited Tanzania for the offshore campus consisted of Prof. Raghu Rengaswamy, Prof. Preeti Aghaliam, Prof. Livy Philip, Prof. KN Satyanarayana and Prof. Annamalai Mani.
In 2022, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan held a series of meetings with his counterparts to strengthen their bilateral ties. Conferences were held with Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mauritius and Ghana to develop education and employment sectors. During the meeting, the chief also discussed India’s support for the IIT project in Tanzania for education and vocational training.
There were reports which claimed that offshore campuses of IITs could be named as “India International Institutes of Technology” and faculty members from reputed technology institutes could be sent on deputation abroad.
