The NExT exam will be divided into two parts: NExT 1, a theoretical exam, and NExT 2, a practical, clinical and oral exam covering 7 clinical topics (representative image).
The NExT exam will serve as both a qualifying exam for final-year graduates and a licensure exam for modern medical practice
Controller of Medical Education of India, National Medical Commission, is in the process of finalizing the framework for the National Exit Test (NExT), a composite examination for medical graduates. According to reports, the NMC will present these norms in an upcoming meeting, where the exam date will also be decided.
The NExT exam will serve as both a final year graduate qualifying exam and a modern medical practice licensure exam. It will also be used to allocate postgraduate seats to MBBS students and to evaluate international medical graduates who want to practice in India.
Draft regulations for NExT testing were made available for public comment by the National Medical Commission in December 2022.
The NExT examination was supposed to start within three years after the NMC came into existence through the National Medical Commission Act 2019. However, the Commission has delayed the timeline by one year through a gazette notification.
The aim is to provide consistency in the collective assessment process for medical graduates across the country by ensuring common standards of education and training. To facilitate the schedule, the academic unit of the commission has recently contacted the medical colleges to inquire about the status of final MBBS courses of their current batch. This information will be useful to finalize the exam date.
The NExT exam will be divided into two parts – NExT 1, which will be a theoretical exam, and NExT 2, which will include practical, clinical and oral exams covering seven clinical topics or disciplines. Officials are also planning a mock test to familiarize students with the procedure.
Apart from the existing National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), NExT will be applicable to prestigious institutes like All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). This initiative seeks to develop unified standards for medical education across the country.
