According to Reuters, the 32-year-old also said he tried to buy a ticket from German airline Lufthansa but was advised he could only enter the Schengen area through Spain, which issued his visa. CNN was not able to independently verify this.
Tennis is one of the prominent sports that welcomes Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competition despite the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board’s initial recommendation to ban them in February 2022.
But in January 2023, the IOC outlined a multi-step plan for Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the upcoming 2024 Summer Games in Paris and 2026 Winter Games in Milan, drawing criticism from the United States, Canada and several Europeans. Bach blasted some European governments as “deplorable” for what he called their “negative reaction” to the agency’s stance on Russia.
