Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Selim make a dynamic team
Actor Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the best actors of his generation. On top of his war film experience, his resume is filled with a variety of roles – crime videographer Louis Bloom (‘Nightcrawler‘) to Mysterio (‘Spider-Man: Far From Home‘), Gyllenhaal is an excellent choice to play Sergeant John Kinley. Starring opposite Gyllenhaal is Dar Salim, Afghan interpreter Ahmed. The two characters initially dislike each other but are forced to work together. Through the movie, the bond grows stronger as they learn to trust each other.
Salim Ahmed’s acting keynote says:
“He’s someone you can relate to. He is a man who will do anything to keep his family safe. He just wants to give his children the opportunities he doesn’t have. But even a man, when he is faced with the ultimate choice, is a reminder that most of us have good in us and will do what is right in that moment. It is a mirror of the relationship between the two men. So playing Ahmed was key, I think.
Guy Ritchie takes a different screenwriting approach with this movie
For this movie, director Guy Ritchie took a slightly different approach to the screenplay. It wasn’t a fully finished script but the director knew what story he wanted to tell and where he wanted to go with it. Every morning, he would discuss the scenes with the actors – how to work on them, bounce ideas off. From there, the director would write the scenes, making necessary edits or changes.
Jake Gyllenhaal talks more about his on-set experience and the different process:
“Then when we got there, it was a process of, “Okay, come on set. Here are the scenes today. How do we start working on them? What do you think?” Then he’d write in the morning. He’d write very quickly. He’d write in the morning and write our scene. He’d either change the scene or edit it, or sometimes write the whole thing from the night before or based on our discussions. Then we’d write. would go in there and we’d play it. The next day we’d add to the board. As the board grew, he’d be able to play more and more of the references we made. Then we’d start telling the story of what once existed as the foundation of a house.”
