A basic idea about a spy whose family is drawn into his work sounds a lot like this James Cameron‘s 1994 action-comedy thriller ‘true false‘, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger And Jamie Lee Curtis.
And indeed, such a show exists –– it’s even called ‘True Lies’ and has the same plotline with some changes – but unfortunately the series, which had its first season on CBS, failed to generate interest among viewers and was cancelled. has been
Its entire first season is premiering Netflix‘FUBAR’ is an example of how to do that story with a lighter touch and while it may not have a title, it does have a secret weapon: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s smile and a return to the set mix – pieces that made ‘True Lies’ so entertaining. .
What happens in ‘FUBAR’?
The series follows Schwarzenegger’s Luke Brunner, a CIA operative who takes on innovative bad guys (basically an Ernie character from his 1980s heyday) and a respectable reputation at the agency.
But Luke, long ago realized the toll of his job and the need for complete secrecy on his family –– divorced from his wife Tally (Fabiana Udenio) for nearly 20 years –– ready to retire. He plans to get his wife back and properly reconnect with his adult children, especially Emma (Monica Barbaro)
Before he actually called it quits though, he revealed that Boro (Gabriel Luna), the son of Luke, a terrorist dispatched years ago while working undercover, has resurfaced and aims to relaunch his father’s dangerous organization with even greater intensity. So, our hero must return to the field… only to discover that Emma is already there, and that she herself has been a CIA operative for the past few years. The father-daughter bond she hoped to achieve now takes on a far more advanced, more dangerous nature…
Created and directed by Nick Santora (who previously worked on the likes of ‘Scorpion’ and ‘Reacher’), ‘FUBAR’ is a Skydance television project.
Who else is present in ‘FUBAR’?
This show also features Fortune Famester, Barbara Eve Harris, Travis Van Winkle, Aparna Briel, Joy Baruchel, Milan Carter And Scott Thompson.
Is ‘FUBAR’ worth your time?
If you’ve been missing the kind of action charisma that Schwarzenegger brought to the screen, this should help alleviate those withdrawal symptoms. The actor and former bodybuilder has taken it in stride with recent cinematic choices (‘Terminator: Dark Fate‘ Seemingly put the final nail in the coffin of his work with that franchise, among others’Iron mask‘ and ‘Killing Gunther’ rarely burnished his career or the box office with glory).
With ‘FUBAR’, he’s in much tougher territory.
Schwarzenegger is in fine form as Luke, his usual bravado on display but balanced by a decent sprinkling of vulnerability. Even though this is a man who knows full well that he is one of the best in the business, he still tends to make mistakes when it comes to those he loves.

Santora and his team have cleverly built around their leading man to take some of the comedy load out of him. Milan Carter is especially well-developed as Barry, Luke’s CIA tech guy and the “man in the chair” who’s the only person who even knows his family (the two run a gym supply company as their cover story).
And it’s far from a two-man operation, with Luke and Barry surrounded by a team that has both spy skills and winning comic personalities –– Feemster and Van Winkle bat well as Roo and Aldo, the pair’s natural backups on the field. As the story develops, all the cast are given solid running jokes or moments to show what they can do, and the characters feel the benefit of the show’s running time as more than just throwaway sidekicks.
Even small roles, such as Scott Thompson as the CIA psychiatrist hired to help Luke and Emma figure out their broken relationship, work well, with Thompson at one point breaking the pair’s dolls to help them communicate.
Barbaro, meanwhile, has to carry more of the dramatic weight and does so with skill and finesse. Although you can’t always buy her as Ernie’s daughter, she doesn’t do much to bicker with him and can hold her own in the action sequences. At home, meanwhile, she has some fun interactions with her nervy boyfriend, played by Baruchel.
Arnie’s limit
We all know, of course, that Schwarzenegger, whatever he brings to the screen, is not the world’s greatest actor. And ‘FUBAR’ certainly stretches that concept in places. He can provide some comedy and a fair share of drama, but he’s more comfortable when things are blown up or he’s imposing.
The show takes a while to really hit its stride –– although it opens with a fun action sequence, it doesn’t quite manage to hide the initial exposition dump to introduce Luke’s situation and various family connections. And there are moments where you really feel like you’re watching a pilot episode for a show.
Plus, even with the generous budget offered by Netflix, the stunt sequences won’t quite challenge the levels Schwarzenegger regularly displayed in his glory days. And a subplot or two, such as when the owners of a rival gym supply company complain about Luke’s success when he rarely seems to be in the office, Tally is warned to do something quick to get more done when he starts working for them (still about unknown) twice his life).
Still, stick with it and the series soon finds the right mix of espionage set-up and goofy comedy. Ernie has had the most fun on screen in years and it proves to be infectious.
‘FUBAR’ has 6.5 out of 10 stars.
