New Delhi has deployed security forces in Manipur to quell the communal unrest that erupted earlier this month. Dozens of rebel fighters have been killed in clashes with security forces in India’s remote northeastern state of Manipur.
The state has been on edge since inter-ethnic violence erupted on May 3 between tribal groups and the ethnic majority Meitei people over plans to increase economic quotas in Meitee.
The unrest left dozens dead and thousands displaced.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh told reporters on Sunday that at least 40 militants were killed in the operation by the security forces.
He also said that two policemen were also killed in the last two days of unrest.
“Terrorists are using M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles and sniper guns against civilians. They came to many villages to burn houses,” local media quoted Singh as saying.
“We have started taking very strong action against them with the help of army and other security forces. We have received reports that around 40 terrorists have been gunned down,” Singh was quoted as saying.
The far-flung states of northeastern India — sandwiched between Bangladesh, China and Myanmar — have long been a tinderbox of tensions between various ethnic groups.
New Delhi has deployed thousands of paramilitary and army troops to the state of 3.2 million people. It imposed the curfew after fighting between the majority Meitis, who are mostly Hindu and live around the state capital Imphal, and the mainly Christian Kuki tribe from the neighboring hills.
Mobile internet has been down in the area for several weeks.
Most of the dead are believed to be from the Kuki community, some of whose villages and churches were destroyed by Meitei mobs. But in some places cookies have also targeted Meiti.
The primary event leading to the conflict was Kuki anger over the prospect of Meiti being granted a guaranteed quota of government jobs and other benefits through affirmative action.
This has long fueled fears among the Kuki that the Meitei may be allowed to acquire land in areas currently reserved for them and other tribal groups.
