the theater 26th May,’You hurt my feelings‘ represents the director’s reconciliation Nicole Holfsener and stars Julia Louis-DreyfusAnd that’s a welcome one.
In an era when adult dramas and comedies have a hard time finding a place among the crowd of huge franchise behemoths at the multiplex, it’s reassuring to know that ‘You Heart My Feelings’ represents the latest reliable low-key laugh from Holfsener, who specializes in stories about the emotional and life of those around them. Of characters obsessed with circumstance, whose worlds are thrown for a loop by unexpected circumstances.
What is the story of ‘You Hurt My Feelings’?
The film follows married couple Louis-Dreyfus’ Beth (a writer whose memoir was published to some acclaim and whose latest book, A Work of Fiction, is still in progress) and Don (Tobias Menzies), a therapist who is losing faith in her ability to counsel her increasingly disaffected patients and her own appearance.
Their seemingly happy, if Beth is telling Don to sister-in-law Mark (Arian Moayed) that after reading many drafts he doesn’t really like his new novel. Shocked, Beth begins to question whether he has really been honest with her and how real he has been with others in his life, including sister Sarah (Michaela Watkins) and son Elliot (Wayne Teague), an aspiring author himself, currently spends time running a New York weed shop.
Real truths begin to swim to the surface of this seemingly happy relationship as waves of unlikely drama ripple through both partners’ work and family circles.
Who else is in the movie?
In addition to the leads, Holfsenner also has the latest features Jenny Berlin Like Beth and Sarah’s pitiful mother Georgia, Amber Tamblyn, David Cross, Jack Cherry And Sarah Steele Among Don’s patients, plus Brian Reynoso, Carolina Greenidge, Doug MdLynsey Lewis and Claudia Robinson.

A welcome reunion
The biggest draw of “Feelings” — beyond Holfsener’s typically incisive, witty script and fine direction — is his welcome post-2013 reunion with Louis-Dreyfus.enough said‘ Say, he may have some means of being Holofsena’s ally in scale Catherine KeenerBut the two definitely found a solid vibe.
As Beth, Louis-Dreyfus changes tracks from a (mostly) contented wife and mother to a poodle of neuroses, perfectly conveying the sort of neurotic artistic character longing for approval from those around them, and clinging to a mother (Georgia in Berlin is more of an ideal character. Type but gives its level) that is not fully satisfied. Louis-Dreyfus sells every moment of Beth’s journey, turning what could have been a frustrating archetype into a relatable woman. He has been given more than, say, his turn Jonah HillIts overzealous Jewish motherthe people‘
As Don, meanwhile, British actor Menzies is also excellent. Far from being a stock husband in a movie like this, he has his own inner life and a clutch of funny, quirky therapy clients with their own issues (Cross and Tamblyn bring a hilarious real-life married couple energy between the two of them), and Beth is the perfect twitchy complement. . It’s also entertaining how he can be quick as a therapist to give advice to others on how to figure out their relationships but seemingly stymied by the mildest problems that arise within himself.
And their marriage, even in the midst of their disagreements, comes across as schlocky rather than realistic and concise.
Although Beth and Don focus, the film shares care and attention beyond them, building on Watkins’ Sarah and her frustration as an interior designer, choosing more ridiculous/ugly lighting for a desirable client (Clara Wong‘s Ali), and questions whether he would be better off quitting the job and finding something more meaningful. Moayed, meanwhile, Sarah’s schlubby actor husband, is dealing with a career crisis of his own. Mildly successful in films, he is now struggling with his latest work in theater and is beginning to wonder if he should be acting at all. Usually ‘a is seen to be very flashy and successfullegacy‘, Moayed is a great fourth pillar of the central story.
Have problems?
As usual for Holfsenner, the scars are incredibly low-level, seen as a problem only by the people involved. And there’s an opportunity that will turn off some audiences –– is it really possible to whine about wealthy (or at least comfortable) New Yorkers who don’t like their latest job or feel frustrated by their career choices? Fortunately, the writer/director finds humanity in these characters, and the various actors give you enough to care about how their stories turn out.
Yet in a movie with so many well-drawn characters, it’s only Elliot who suffers from slight undernourishment; It’s no fault of Teague, who offers a fun performance, but she really only has one chance to shine, in a minor breakdown in front of her parents who believe her mother’s motivation set her up to fail in life.
But these are relatively minor complaints in an effective new film from a writer/director whose keen sense of humor and character is lacking. New work from Holfsenner is a joy to behold, and something reliably entertaining for anyone who isn’t drawn to capes flying in the wind or cars racing down the street.
It may not be on the same level as ‘Enough Said’ or being Oscar-nominated, Melissa McCarthy-acting’Can you ever forgive me?‘, but ‘You Hurt My Feelings’ is a solid entry in Holfsener’s neuroses-filled character canon.
