Madrid:
Carlos Alcaraz said Wednesday that his competitive fire burns so fiercely that he not only wants to be the world’s greatest tennis player, he also plans to reign supreme on the marbles.
World number two and US Open champion Alcaraz advanced to the semifinals of the Madrid Open with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Karen Khachanov for her 27th win in 29 matches in 2023.
“I want to be one of the best tennis players in history,” Alcaraz, 20, said Friday as the semifinals took place in the Spanish capital.
“I’m ambitious. I don’t want to lose — even in marbles. I won’t get tired of winning, I live every day, I love playing tennis so I’m not afraid that I’ll get tired of winning because that won’t happen.”
Alcaraz has already played 150 ATP Tour matches, winning 117 times.
The run includes nine career titles while his 2022 US Open win saw him become the sport’s youngest world number one.
“I am proud that in such a short time I have established myself on the circuit with incredible moments, which have helped me learn and grow very quickly,” said Alcarez.
“My dream in tennis right now is to be one of the greatest players in history. I know it’s a big dream — maybe too big. But you have to dream and think big.”
On Wednesday, the top seed fought back from 4-1 and 5-2 deficits in the second set to beat 12th-ranked Khachanov in one hour and 52 minutes.
Alcaraz blew up Alexander Zverev A repeat of last year’s final in the Spanish capital on Tuesday, but Khachanov is strongly opposed.
“Winning this match will give me a lot of confidence, Karen was at a great level and pushed me to the limit,” said Alcaraz who bagged 31 winners.
“It was decided by the little details and I’m very, very happy to get through this round.”
The Russian, who knocked out compatriot Andrey Rublev this week to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open, showed no fear in the first set despite his opponent’s form.
Alcaraz eventually found a decisive break to take a 4-3 lead with a powerful forehand that Khachanov couldn’t successfully return.
The Spaniard assembled and served it out.
Alcaraz went ahead long after saving the first break point when Khachanov went 3-1 up in the second set.
The world number 12 forced two more in the sixth game but could not convert as Alcaraz fought hard to hold.
Alcaraz’s persistence paid off as he volleyed back to make it 4-5.
The US Open champion consolidated his break and then earned another when Khachanov hit an attempted forehand winner into the net.
Aiming for his 10th Tour level title, the crowd-pleasing home favorite sealed his progress with a powerful forehand drive.
Alcaraz will face either Daniel Altmaier or Borna Coric in Friday’s semifinals.
