Indian Railways is constructing the country’s first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji Khad in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Ministry of Railways shared construction updates on the bridge on Twitter, revealing that the work on the bridge is nearing completion. The bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. The Anji Khad Bridge connecting Katra and Riasi is called an engineering marvel. This link will soon be a breakthrough in connecting Kashmir with the rest of India by train.
As for the USBRL project, it is one of the most challenging projects of the Indian Railways and includes many engineering marvels including the Anji Bridge. The project will also have the world’s highest railway bridge over the river Chenab. The 1,315-metre arch bridge will be taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris and rise 331 meters above the riverbed.

The Anji Khad Bridge forms the second phase of the project and is being constructed 7 km south of the Chenab Bridge. Recently, Indian Railways completed a section of the 111 km longest tunnel on the Banihal-Katra rail link in Jammu and Kashmir.
The T-49B tunnel is 12.6 km long and is a part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line (USBRL) project. The section is located between Kundan Adit and Arpinchala in Khari tehsil, the company constructing the project said. “Being constructed on the new Austrian tunneling system in Ramban district, the tunnel will have a double track on completion,” the official said. He further said that tunneling has been done with utmost caution considering the geological challenges.
On December 5, 2021, another tunnel in the Bankot area near Banihal was connected after a breakthrough, while the pylon work of India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji Khad in Resi district was completed on January 4, brightening a prospect. Trains will connect Kashmir with the rest of the country in the next few years.
Out of the 272 km USBRL project, work on 161 km was commissioned in phases. The first phase of 118-km-Qazigund-Baramulla section was commissioned in October 2009, followed by 18-km-Banihal-Qazigund in June 2013 and 25-km-Udhampur-Katra section in July-Banihal section totaling 37 bridges. — 26 major and 11 minor — and 35 tunnels.
