A butcher died while slaughtering a pig in Hong Kong on Friday, the city’s police said.
The 61-year-old butcher, who worked at the Xiong Shui slaughterhouse on the northern outskirts of the city near the border with mainland China, was knocked to the ground by the struggling pig and sustained a 40cm (15in) flesh wound. Clever, police told CNN.
The butcher was about to kill the pig — which he had already shot with an electric stun gun — when it regained consciousness and rammed him, police said.
A co-worker found the man unconscious with a cleaver in his hand and a wound on his left leg, police said. He was taken to hospital and later declared brought dead.
Police said the cause of death is yet to be ascertained.
The city’s labor department said it has launched an investigation.
“The Department of Labor is saddened by the man’s death and offers his deepest condolences to his family,” it said in a statement.
“We will complete the investigation as soon as possible to identify the cause of the accident, hold the duty holders accountable and recommend improvement measures. We will take action as per law in case of any violation of work safety act,” said a spokesperson of the department.
The city’s Department of Food and Environmental Hygiene, which runs the animal slaughterhouse, offered condolences to the man’s family in a statement.
