the man Suspected of killing four University of Idaho students He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a status conference — his second appearance in an Idaho court since his extradition from Pennsylvania following his arrest late last month.
Brian Kohberger, 28, is being held without bail in the Latah County Jail in Idaho, where he faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in the fatal stabbing of 21-year-old Kylie Goncalves; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Ethan Chapin, 20.
After a night out, four undergrads were found dead in an off-campus home on Nov. 13, police said, with nerve injuries. College town in Moscow, IdahoAlong the Washington state border.
Authorities arrested Kohberger about seven weeks later, taking him into custody at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania, where an attorney said he had traveled for the holidays. And though it took nearly two months for authorities to publicly name a suspect, police — who Faced with increasing criticism While the investigation appeared to be at a standstill — weeks earlier — it began focusing on Kohberger as a suspect.
Meanwhile, a neighbor of Kohberger’s in Pullman, near Washington, told CBS News The suspect asked him a few days after the murder, complaining, “Yeah, looks like they don’t have any leads. It seems it was a crime of passion.” The neighbor asked not to be identified, CBS reported.
One of the most significant pieces of evidence was the witness account of the victim’s surviving roommate, who told police he saw a man dressed in black inside the house on the morning of the murder. According to a probable cause affidavit released last week. The witness described the man as about 5-foot-10 or taller and not very muscular but athletically built with bushy eyebrows.
Investigators were also drawn to a white sedan seen on local surveillance footage in the area around the home. By Nov. 25, they asked local law enforcement to look for the vehicle, by then identified as a Hyundai Elantra.
Days later, officials at Washington State University, where Kohberger was a PhD student in criminal justice, located a vehicle and discovered it was registered to Kohberger, the affidavit said.
When investigators looked up his driver’s license information, they found it matched the description of the man dressed in black provided by the roommate, the affidavit said, specifically noting his height, weight and bushy eyebrows.
Five days after the murder, Kohberger got a new license plate for his car, the affidavit said. When he was arrested in Pennsylvania last week, a white Elantra was found at his home, according to Monroe County Chief Public Defender Jason Labar, who represented the suspect in his extradition case.
Other evidence listed in the affidavit included phone records showing Kohberger’s phone was near the victims’ homes at least a dozen times since June. The phone was also found between 9:12 a.m. and 9:21 a.m., hours after the murder, the documents said.
Additionally, trash authorities recovered from Kohberger’s family home revealed a DNA profile linked to DNA on the sheath of a tan leather knife that was found lying on the man’s bed, the affidavit said. DNA recovered from the garbage is believed to belong to the biological father of the man whose DNA was found on the sheath, it said.
A law enforcement source told CNN that Kohberger was under surveillance for four days before his arrest. During that time, he was seen throwing trash bags into neighbors’ trash bins and “cleaned his car inside and out, not missing an inch,” according to the source.
The court order prohibits the prosecution and defense from commenting outside of public record references to the case.
