Akbari was arrested “a few days ago” on charges of “espionage against the country,” according to allegations published in Mizan on Wednesday.
“On the basis of this and after filing a complaint against the accused, the file was sent to the court and a hearing was held in the presence of the lawyer of the accused and on the basis of valid documents in the file this person was sentenced to death for espionage. UK,” Meezan said.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the move.
Sunak wrote on Twitter, “I am horrified by the execution of British-Iranian Alireza Akbari in Iran.
“It was a cruel and cowardly act, committed by a barbaric regime with no respect for the human rights of its own people. My thoughts are with Alireza’s friends and family.”
Echoing Sunak’s statement, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley called the execution a “barbaric act” that “deserves condemnation in the strongest possible terms.”
“It will not stand without challenges. My thoughts are with Alireza Akbari’s family,” he wrote on Twitter.
Cleverley said his office would subpoena Iran’s charge d’affaires over the execution.
“This will not go unchallenged and we will summon Iran’s charge d’affaires to make clear our disgust with Iran’s actions. Our thoughts are with Mr. Akbari’s family,” Cleverley said in a statement.
“The execution of British-Iranian Alireza Akbari is a barbaric act that deserves condemnation in the strongest possible terms. With these politically motivated actions, the Iranian regime has once again shown its callous disregard for human life.”
The UK government urged Iran not to execute Akbari. The Foreign Office said it would continue to support his family.
According to Iran’s reformist outlet Shargh Daily, Akbari previously served as Iran’s deputy defense minister and headed the strategic research institute, as well as a member of the military body that implemented the UN resolution ending the Iran-Iraq war. .
The BBC reported that Akbari was arrested in 2019 and served under Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, who was in office from 1997 to 2005.
