US forces killed ISIS leader Usamah al-Muhajir in an airstrike in eastern Syria on Friday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a statement on Sunday.
Al-Muhajir was killed by the same MQ-9 Reaper drone Harassment by Russian aircraft of the region. The two incidents happened on the same day, the US said, after the drone struck after interacting with Russian craft.
“We have made it clear that we remain committed to the defeat of ISIS throughout the region,” said Gen. Michael Kurilla, CENTCOM commander. “ISIS remains a threat, not only to the region, but beyond.”
CENTCOM clarified that there was no indication that any civilians had been killed in the attack, but the US and allies were assessing reports of civilian casualties.

US and allied forces in the region have conducted a series of operations against ISIS leaders active in Syria. The US killed the head of the agency, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, In a 2019 campaign. Since then, ISIS forces have been operating as cells.
The MQ-9 drones used in the attack had previously interacted with Russian SU-35 fighter jets throughout the past week. Russian craft repeatedly flew into the path of the drones, forcing them to take evasive action to avoid collisions.

“Russian military aircraft “Engaged in unsafe and unprofessional behavior Thursday, 9:30 a.m. local time, while interacting with U.S. MQ-9 drones conducting our de-ISIS mission in Syria,” said Lt. Gen. Alexa Grinkiewicz, commander, 9th AF and CENTCOM’s CFACC. The Russian aircraft dropped flares in front of the drone and flew dangerously close, jeopardizing the safety of all aircraft involved.”

“This is the second instance of dangerous behavior by Russian pilots in the past 24 hours, with the first occurring at approximately 10:40 a.m. local time on Wednesday,” he added.
The US military also urged Russian forces In Syria “to stop this reckless behavior and adhere to the standards of behavior expected of a professional air force, so that we can resume our focus on the permanent defeat of ISIS,” he said.

The United States maintains a force of about 900 troops deployed in Syria. They primarily work with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in the fight against Islamic State militants.
